José António Carvalho
José António Ribeiro de Carvalho (born 17 February 1979 in , Marco de Canaveses) is a Portuguese professor, author and politician of the Chega party. He has been a Member of the Assembly of the Republic for the Porto constituency since 2024. Biography Carvalho graduated with a master's degree in history and education studies at the Universidade Portucalense Infante D. Henrique. He was then employed as a teacher and researcher at the university. Marco de Canaveses () is a city and municipality on Porto district, in northern Portugal. The population in 2011 was 53,450, in an area of 201.89 km2. The city itself had a population of 9,042 in 2001. Geography The city of Marco Canaveses is strongly influenced by its topography, with mainly areas at altitudes between 200 and 600 meters, reaching the highest levels in Aboboreira and Montedeiras Mountains. Chega (; officially stylised as CHEGA!, , often truncated to CH in visual media) is a national conservative and right-wing populist political party in Portugal, formed in 2019 by André Ventura. It is on the far-right of the political spectrum. Chega won one seat in the Assembly of the Republic in the 2019 election. Since this election, the party has rapidly grown in popularity, gaining significant support for its anti-establishment positions. It was the third most voted party in the elections of 2022 taking 12 seats. It saw a surge in support in the 2024 winning 50 seats, more than quadrupling its previous seat count.
