Josias River

The Josias River rises from a collection of small ponds, marshlands and vernal pools situated along the southeastern flank of Mount Agamenticus in the town of York, Maine, augmented by tributaries Clay Hill Brook and Muddy Brook. The river follows a northeasterly path through the towns of York and Ogunquit, Maine before crossing under Route 1 in Ogunquit, then taking a sharp bend southeast and eventually feeding into Perkins Cove, a popular artist and tourist area. The Josias River then empties into the Gulf of Maine and the Atlantic Ocean. Mount Agamenticus
Mount Agamenticus is a high monadnock in the town of York, Maine. The area surrounding the summit is a park reservation which provides habitat for wildlife and a venue for recreation. The greater Agamenticus region covers nearly in the southern Maine towns of Eliot, Ogunquit, South Berwick, Wells and York. Though under high, Mount Agamenticus was historically a noted landmark for sailors. Mount Agamenticus is also affectionately known by older locals as "Big A," the nickname of a ski slope that once operated on its northeast flank, remnants of which can be seen both near the summit and along the trails. Ogunquit ( ) is a resort town in York County, Maine, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 1,577. Ogunquit is part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford metropolitan area. History Ogunquit was first a village within Wells, which was settled in 1641. The first sawmill was established in 1686, and shipbuilding developed along the tidal Ogunquit River. Local shipwrights built schooners, brigs and dories. At what was then called Fish Cove, near the unnavigable Josias River, fishing was a major livelihood. But the cove was unprotected by a headland or breakwater from Atlantic storms, so fishermen had to protect their boats by hauling them ashore each night. Resolving to create a safe anchorage, they formed the Fish Cove Harbor Association, and dug a channel across land they purchased to connect Fish Cove with the Josias River. Perkins Cove
Perkins Cove is a small harbor bay and fishing village in the town of Ogunquit in York County, Maine, United States. History English fishermen first began settling here in the 1620s. Prior to this, the land had been home to the Native Abenaki peoples. In the early years of the European settlement, the area was most commonly referred to as Fish Cove or simply "the cove". It wouldn't be until the late 1800s that the name Perkins Cove would be adopted. The Perkins family, one of the earliest seafaring families in the cove, ran a boardinghouse called the "Perkins Cove House" and from that the name was derived. At the very end of the nineteenth century, Perkins Cove would begin its transformation into a thriving artist colony.
