Josiah Fisher Bell
Josiah Fisher Bell (1820-October 1890) was the youngest son of Josiah Bell (for whom the Bell House is named) and his wife Mary. He married Susan Benjamin Leecraft on November 25, 1841. Although listed as a farmer on the 1860 Carteret County census, he was more widely known for his role with the Confederate Secret Service during the Civil War. Bell is buried in the Old Burying Ground. Among the projects for which he was known, was the attempted sabotage of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Carteret County
Carteret County is located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 67,686. Its county seat is Beaufort. The county was created in 1722 as Carteret Precinct and gained county status in 1739. It was named for Sir George Carteret, one of the 17th century English Lords Proprietor, or for his descendant and heir John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville. Carteret County comprises the Morehead City, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the New Bern-Morehead City, NC Combined Statistical Area. Most of the county is part of the Crystal Coast. History The first male of English parents born in the current area of North Carolina was John Fulford. He was born in 1629 in what is now Carteret County. He settled in this area and died in 1729. The Confederate Secret Service refers to any of a number of official and semi-official secret service organizations and operations conducted by the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Some of the organizations were under the direction of the Confederate government, others operated independently with government approval, while still others were either completely independent of the government or operated with only its tacit acknowledgment. By 1864, the Confederate government was attempting to gain control over the various operations that had sprung up since the beginning of the war, but often with little success. Secret legislation was put before the Confederate Congress to create an official Special and Secret Bureau of the War Department. Old Burying Ground (Beaufort, North Carolina)
Old Burying Ground is a historic cemetery located at Beaufort, Carteret County, North Carolina. It was established in 1724. There are approximately 200 stones from the pre-American Civil War era, approximately 45 from the war period, about 150 from 1865 to 1900, and a few 20th-century markers. Cape Lookout Lighthouse
The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is a 163-foot-high lighthouse located on the southern Outer Banks of North Carolina. It flashes every 15 seconds and is visible at least 12 miles out to sea and up to 19 miles. It is one of the very few lighthouses that operate during the day. It became fully automated in 1950. The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is the only such structure in the United States to bear the checkered daymark, intended not only for differentiation between similar light towers, but also to show direction. The center of the black diamonds points in a north-south direction, while the center of the white diamonds points east-west.
