Josiah Charles Hughes
Josiah Charles Hughes (May 5, 1843 – November 8, 1886) was a political figure in British Columbia. He represented New Westminster District in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1871 until his retirement at the 1875 provincial election. He served as the first deputy speaker of the Legislature in 1872. His first name also appears as Josias. He was born in Omemee, Ontario, the son of J. L. Hughes, a native of Ireland, and Mary Ann Hall, and was educated in Peterborough and Cobourg. He came to British Columbia in 1862. Hughes worked as a clerk with a freighting company for about five years. He then worked as an accountant for about nine years. In 1871, he married Leonora Z. DeBeck. Hughes lived at Burrard Inlet. New Westminster (provincial Electoral District)
New Westminster is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. It is the only electoral district in British Columbia to have existed for every general election. The riding is notable for a couple of reasons. It never voted for a Social Credit candidate during the Socred's era of dominance between 1952 and 1991. It was also represented by Byron Ingemar Johnson, the 24th Premier of British Columbia. During the 1990s, the riding was represented by Anita Hagen, who served as Deputy Premier of British Columbia and Minister of Education from 1991 to 1993 during the premiership of Mike Harcourt. Hagen was replaced by Graeme Bowbrick in 1996, who served as Minister of Advanced Education in 2000, and Attorney General from 2000 to 2001. Omemee, Ontario
Omemee is a community within the city of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada, formerly known as Victoria County. Located on Ontario Highway 7, which is the Trans-Canada Highway, Omemee is one of the communities in the Kawartha Lakes, as the proclaimed "city" is vastly rural and has but one major population centre. The community had a population of 1,247 in the Canada 2011 Census. It is located between the city of Peterborough and the community of Lindsay. Lindsay is the largest population centre in the city of Kawartha Lakes, and serves as the administrative centre as it did with Victoria County. Omemee’s only claim to fame was the early childhood home of musician Neil Young, and of his father, author and sportswriter Scott Young. Cobourg ( ) is a town in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in Southern Ontario east of Toronto and east of Oshawa. It is the largest town in and seat of Northumberland County. New Westminster (colloquially known as New West) is a city in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, Canada, and a member municipality of the Metro Vancouver Regional District. Metlakatla, British Columbia (Tsimshian: ''Maxłaxaała'') is a small community that is one of the seven Tsimshian village communities in British Columbia, Canada. It is situated at Metlakatla Pass near Prince Rupert, British Columbia.
