Joshua Jeays
Joshua Jeays (1812–1881) was a Leicester-born carpenter who became a successful developer, an alderman and mayor of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.Brisbane City Council Archives Personal life Joshua Jeays was born in 1812 in Leicestershire, England.,Queensland Registrar-General of Births, Deaths & Marriages and died in Brisbane in 1881, at the age of 69. He married Sarah Edwyn in 1838 in Marylebone, Middlesex, England with whom he had a number of children including: * Sarah Jane * Joseph Joshua (died 1909) * Charles Edwyn (died 1883) There may have been other children who died in infancy. Joshua and Sarah and the three children above immigrated to Moreton Bay in 1853. Jeays purchased land and built 'Roma Villa' on the corner of Upper Roma and Skew Streets, Petrie Terrace (an area then known as 'the Green Hills'), where he lived with his wife and family. Toowong Cemetery
Toowong Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery on the corner of Frederick Street and Mt Coot-tha Road, Toowong, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was established in 1866 and formally opened in 1875. It is Queensland, Queensland's largest cemetery and is located on forty-four hectares of land at the corner of Frederick Street and Mount Coot-tha Road approximately four and a half kilometres west of Brisbane. It was previously known as Brisbane General Cemetery. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 31 December 2002. Moorlands is a heritage-listed villa at 451 Coronation Drive, Auchenflower, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Richard Gailey and was built by contractor Arthur Smith. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 August 1992. History Moorlands was constructed in 1892 for the Mayne family of Brisbane. It replaced an earlier timber residence on the site which was known as Moorlands Villa. Mary Mayne, widow of Patrick Mayne, had purchased the earlier house and in 1876. Patrick Mayne was a prominent Brisbane resident in the 1860s-1870s who owned a butcher shop in Queen Street, served as an alderman of the Brisbane Municipal Council and speculated in property. Mary Mayne and her five children resided in Moorlands Villa until her death in September 1889. ''The Mayne Inheritance'' is a non-fiction narrative written by Queensland author Rosamond Siemon. It was first published in 1997 by University of Queensland Press, and a new edition with updated information was issued by the same publisher in 2003. The book won the Brisbane City Council's ''One Book One Brisbane'' competition in 2003. Plot and themes ''The Mayne Inheritance'' tells the story of Patrick Mayne, a young man who migrated to Australia from his impoverished background in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1841. He was born in Cookstown, County Tyrone, Ireland in 23/12/1823. He soon moved to the infant town of Brisbane where he found work as a slaughterman in an abattoir. Walter Hill (1819–1904) was a Scottish-born Australian botanist and horticulturalist, and first curator of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Gardens Point in Brisbane, Australia. Personal life Walter Hill was born at Scotsdyke, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, on 31 December 1819, the son of David Hill and Elizabeth Beattie. Scotsdyke is virtually on the border of England and Scotland, and is presumably a reference to the moat about south of the village of Canobie (now spelled ''Canonbie''). Hill married Jane Smith, the daughter of John Smith and Jane Brunton, on 16 September 1849 at Holy Trinity Brompton Church, Middlesex, England. They had a daughter Ann (born 25 April 1850 in England, died 1 November 1871 in Brisbane).
