Joshua Hecht
Joshua Hecht (March 4, 1928 – March 29, 2019) was an American operatic bass. Biography Born in New York City, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants, he received a Bachelor of Arts from New York University, in 1951. Hecht was a student of Rosa Ponselle, and made his formal debut with her company, the Baltimore Civic Opera, in 1953, as the Comte des Grieux in ''Manon''. Two years later, he first appeared with the New York City Opera, as Monterone in ''Rigoletto'', with Cornell MacNeil in the name part. A bass is a type of classical male singing voice and has the lowest vocal range of all voice types. Phyllis Curtin (née Smith; December 3, 1921 – June 5, 2016) was an American soprano and academic teacher who had an active career in operas and concerts from the early 1950s through the 1980s. She is known for her creation of roles in operas by Carlisle Floyd, such as the title role in ''Susannah'' and Catherine Earnshaw in ''Wuthering Heights''. She was a dedicated song recitalist, who retired from singing in 1984. ''Die schweigsame Frau'' (''The Silent Woman''), Op. 80, is a 1935 comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss with libretto by Stefan Zweig after Ben Jonson's '' Epicoene, or the Silent Woman''. Composition history Since ''Elektra'' and '' Der Rosenkavalier'', with only the exception of '' Intermezzo'', all previous operas by Strauss were based on libretti by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who died in 1929. Regina (Blitzstein)
''Regina'' is an opera by Marc Blitzstein, to his own libretto based on the play '' The Little Foxes'' by Lillian Hellman. It was completed in 1948 and premiered the next year. Blitzstein chose this source in order to make a strong statement against capitalism. In three acts, the musical style has been described as new American verismo, abounding in the use of spirituals, Victorian parlour music, dance forms, ragtime, aria and large, symphonic score. Borrowing from both opera and Broadway styles, in a manner similar to Leonard Bernstein in '' Trouble in Tahiti'' and Virgil Thomson in '' Four Saints in Three Acts'', ''Regina'' has been said to straddle the line between entertainment and so-called serious music. Marcus Samuel Blitzstein (March 2, 1905January 22, 1964), was an American composer, lyricist, and librettist. He won national attention in 1937 when his pro- union musical '' The Cradle Will Rock'', directed by Orson Welles, was shut down by the Works Progress Administration. He is known for ''The Cradle Will Rock'' and for his off-Broadway translation/adaptation of ''The Threepenny Opera'' by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. Vladimir Sergeyevich Rosing (russian: Владимир Серге́евич Розинг) (November 24, 1963), also known as Val Rosing, was a Russian-born operatic tenor and stage director who spent most of his professional career in the United Kingdom and the United States. In his formative years he experienced the last years of the "golden age" of opera, and he dedicated himself through his singing and directing into breathing new life into opera's outworn mannerisms and methods. ''The Ballad of Baby Doe'' is an opera by the American composer Douglas Moore that uses an English-language libretto by John Latouche. It is Moore's most famous opera and one of the few American operas to be in the standard repertory. Especially famous are the title heroine's five arias: "Letter Aria," "Willow Song," "I Knew it Was Wrong", "Gold is a Fine Thing", and "Always Through the Changing." Horace Tabor's "Warm as the Autumn Light" is also frequently heard. Douglas Moore
Douglas Stuart Moore (August 10, 1893 – July 25, 1969) was an American composer, songwriter, organist, pianist, conductor, educator, actor, and author. A composer who mainly wrote works with an American subject, his music is generally characterized by lyricism in a popular or conservative style which generally eschewed the more experimental progressive trends of musical modernism. Composer Virgil Thomson described Moore as a neoromantic composer who was influenced by American folk music. William Jennings Bryan (March 19, 1860 – July 26, 1925) was an American lawyer, orator and politician.
