Joseph Plateau Award
A Joseph Plateau Award was an accolade presented by the Flanders International Film Festival Ghent, first awarded in 1985. The awards were given in several categories to honor cinematic achievements in the film industry. They were restricted to Belgian cinema and Belgian producers, directors, and actors. The name of the award comes from the physicist Joseph Plateau (1801–1883). They were considered to be the Belgian equivalent to the Academy Awards of the United States. The awards ceremony was held in conjunction with the Flanders International Film Festival Ghent, which initially co-founded the event. The last award ceremony was held on March 7, 2006. Film Fest Gent, also known as International Film Fest Gent, is an annual international film festival in Ghent, Belgium. Joseph Plateau
Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau (; 14 October 1801 – 15 September 1883) was a Belgian physicist and mathematician. He was one of the first people to demonstrate the illusion of a moving image. To do this, he used counterrotating disks with repeating drawn images in small increments of motion on one and regularly spaced slits in the other. He called this device of 1832 the phenakistiscope. Ensor Award
The Ensor Award (for the first two years ''Vlaamse Filmprijzen'') is an accolade presented by the Ensor Academy of Belgium to recognize cinematic achievement in the film industry and is the highest film honour in the Flemish speaking part of the country. The awards are given out annually at the Ostend Film Festival. The trophy was created by Ostend artist Yves Velter from Ostend and named after James Ensor, it is the successor of the Joseph Plateau Award that honored films from the entire country. The Ostend Film Festival () is an annual film festival held in Ostend, Belgium. The film voted by a jury as the best in the competition section receives the Best Film Award.
