Joseph M. Souki
Joseph M. Souki (born 1933) is an American Democratic politician and former Speaker of the Hawaii House of Representatives. He served as a Private First Class in the United States Army from 1954–1956. Souki replaced former Speaker Calvin Say in 2013, after organizing a coalition with both Democrats and Republicans. This was his second tenure as Speaker, as he had previously served from 1993 to 1999. He represented Hawaii's 8th District since 1982, and served as Chair of the Finance Committee and the Transportation Committee. He was the primary sponsor of 825 bills. Before becoming a politician, Souki was a real estate broker and Executive Director of the Maui Economic Opportunity. Souki was accused by several women of multiple counts of sexual harassment including unwanted kissing, touching and sexual language by the Hawaii State Ethics Commission. The politics of the U.S. state of Hawaii are typically dominated by the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party of Hawaii was formed in 1900, by supporters of Queen Liliʻuokalani. For the first half of the twentieth century, the Republican Party ruled comfortably, dominating local politics until the end of World War II. After the war, Honolulu police officer John A. Burns began organizing plantation laborers, including many Japanese and Filipino Americans and built a coalition that gradually strengthened the Democratic Party in Hawaii. This culminated in the Hawaii Democratic Revolution of 1954, after which Republican political influence in the islands was greatly diminished. As a result, Hawaii's congressional politics have been dominated by Democrats since statehood in 1959. KITV (channel 4) is a television station in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States, serving the Hawaiian Islands as an affiliate of ABC. It is owned by Allen Media Group alongside multicultural independent station KIKU (channel 20).
