Joseph Kirtland
Joseph Kirtland is a mathematician, specializing in group theory. His 2000 book ''Identification Numbers and Check Digit Schemes'' won the 2002 Beckenbach Book Prize. Biography Kirkland matriculated in 1981 at Syracuse University, where he graduated in 1985 with a B.S. in mathematics. At the University of New Hampshire, he graduated in mathematics with an M.S. in 1987 and a Ph.D. in 1992. His Ph.D. thesis ''Finite Groups as a Generalization of Vector Spaces through the Use of Splitting Systems'' was supervised by Homer Franklin Bechtell Jr. (1929–2022). In September 1992, Kirtland joined the staff of the computer science and mathematics department of Marist College. From the academic year 1994–1995 to the academic year 2006–2007, he received 10 times the Faculty Recognition Award given by Marist College's Student Academic Council. In abstract algebra, group theory studies the algebraic structures known as group (mathematics), groups. The concept of a group is central to abstract algebra: other well-known algebraic structures, such as ring (mathematics), rings, field (mathematics), fields, and vector spaces, can all be seen as groups endowed with additional operation (mathematics), operations and axioms. Groups recur throughout mathematics, and the methods of group theory have influenced many parts of algebra.
