Joseph Holmes Miller
Sir Joseph Holmes Miller (12 February 1919 – 6 February 1986) was a New Zealand surveyor, Antarctic explorer and conservationist. He was born in Waimate on 12 February 1919. Miller was the leader of the survey team (which also comprised Robert Douglas Dick, Robert Dick, Ralph Moir, and R. Litt) on the 1949 New Zealand American Fiordland Expedition.'''' Ross Dependency
The Ross Dependency is a region of Antarctica defined by a circular sector, sector originating at the South Pole, passing along longitudes 160th meridian east, 160° east to 150th meridian west, 150° west, and terminating at latitude 60th parallel south, 60° south. It is claimed by New Zealand, a claim mutually accepted only by Australia, the United Kingdom, UK, France and Norway, which are countries that also have territorial claims in Antarctica. Miller Range
The Miller Range () is a mountain range extending south from Nimrod Glacier for along the western edge of the Marsh Glacier in Antarctica. Name The range is named for J.H. "Bob", now Sir Joseph Holmes Miller, a member of the New Zealand party of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1958) who, with G.W. Marsh, mapped this area. Location The Miller Range is in the Transantarctic Mountains to the east of the Ross Ice Shelf. It runs from north to south, and is about long and up to wide. The maximum elevation above the ice sheet is about . There are signs of glaciation on the highest points of the range. The Miller Range is separated by about from the adjacent ranges of the Transantarctic Mountains by the Nimrod and Marsh glaciers. Waimate
Waimate is a town in Canterbury, New Zealand, and the seat of Waimate District. It is situated just inland from the eastern coast of the South Island. The town is reached via a short detour west when travelling on State Highway One, the main North/South road. Waimate is 45.7 km south of Timaru, Canterbury's second city, 20 km north of the Waitaki River, which forms the border between Canterbury and the Otago province to the south and 47.5 km north of Oamaru, the main town of the Waitaki District. Waimate is well known for its population of Bennett's wallabies. These marsupials were introduced from Australia and now live wild in the countryside surrounding the town.
