Joseph Guichard Duverney
Joseph Guichard Duverney or Joseph-Guichard Du Verney (; 5 August 1648 – 10 September 1730) was a French anatomist known for his work in comparative anatomy and for his treatise on the ear. The fracture of the iliac wing of the pelvis is sometimes called the Duverney fracture. Biography Du Verney was a native of Feurs in the province of Forez. His father Jacques Duverny was a doctor in the small community Feurs. His mother was born Antoinette Pittre. His two other older brothers studied medicine and he too studied at the University of Avignon, where in 1667 he obtained his medical degree. Shortly afterwards, he relocated to Paris where he was active in the circle of Abbé Pierre Michon Bourdelot where he came into contact with Claude Perrault. He became known for his assiduous anatomical dissections apart from dealing with patients. Feurs
Feurs (; ) is a commune in the department of Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France. History Antiquity The city was founded by the Romans. The name ''Feurs'' is a contraction of ''Forum Segusiavorum'', in reference to the forum of the Gallo-Roman era. Ptolemy indicates that the city was the capital of the Gallic Segusiavi, and it also appears on the Tabula Peutingeriana. By extension, the city gave its name to Forez. Vestiges of the ancient Roman city are located by the current post office. Archaeologists have unearthed a theater, sewers, milestones, inscriptions, statuettes and pottery that reflect the importance of the Roman town, which was located near major Roman roads. Middle Ages A church dedicated to St. Baudile is reported in 960. A second dedicated to the Virgin Mary appears in the texts in 1001. A Castle in Feurs is reported in 1246. The Jardin des Plantes (, ), also known as the Jardin des Plantes de Paris () when distinguished from other ''jardins des plantes'' in other cities, is the main botanical garden in France. Jardin des Plantes is the official name in the present day, but it is in fact an elliptical form of Jardin Royal des Plantes Médicinales ("Royal Garden of the Medicinal Plants"), which is related to the original purpose of the garden back in the 17th century. Edme Mariotte
Edme Mariotte (; ; c. 162012 May 1684) was a French physicist and priest (abbé). He is particularly well known for formulating Boyle's law independently of Robert Boyle. Mariotte is also credited with designing the first Newton's cradle. Biography Born in Til-Châtel, Edme Mariotte was the youngest son of Simon Mariotte, administrator at the district Til-Châtel (died 16 August 1652), and Catherine Denisot (died 26 September 1636 due to plague). His parents lived in Til-Châtel and had 4 other children: Jean, Denise, Claude, and Catharine. Jean was administrator in the Parlement of Paris from 1630 till his death in 1682. Denise and Claude, both married, stayed in the Dijon region, where as Catharine married Blaise de Beaubrieul, advisor of king Louis de XIV. François-Joseph Hunauld
François-Joseph Hunauld (24 February 1701 – 15 December 1742) was a French anatomist born in Châteaubriant. In 1722 he received his medical degree at Reims, then continued his studies in Paris under Jacques Bénigne Winslow (1669–1760) and Guichard Joseph Duverney (1648–1730). In 1724 he became a member of the Académie des sciences. In 1730 he succeeded Duverney as instructor of anatomy at the ''Jardin du Roi'', a position he kept until his death in 1742. He died in Paris. He is remembered for his work in the field of a significant anatomical museum. Many of his writings were published in the ''Mémoires de l’Académie des sciences''. Jean-Baptiste de Sénac (1693–1770) was a French physician, born in the district of Lombez in Gascony, France. Early life and education Details of Sénac's early life are sketchy. It is generally thought that he studied medicine at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands. He later studied in London, England, where one of his instructors was John Freind (1675–1728). Beginning in 1723, Sénac practiced medicine in Paris, serving (from 1752 to 1770) as a personal physician to King Louis XV. Contributions to medicine Sénac is remembered for important studies of the heart in an era when cardiological medicine was rudimentary. Jacques-Bénigne Winslow
Jacob Benignus Winsløw, also known as Jacques-Bénigne Winslow (17 April 1669 – 3 April 1760), was a Danish-born French anatomist. Life Winsløw was born in Odense, Denmark. Later he became a pupil and successor of Guichard Joseph Duverney, as well as a convert to Catholicism, naturalized in France, and finally became professor of anatomy at the Jardin du Roi in Paris. He greatly admired Bishop Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, the famous preacher who had been instrumental in his conversion, and changed his first name to that of Bossuet. Winsløw died in Paris.
