Joseph Greene (Newfoundland Politician)
Joseph M. Greene (1890 – December 17, 1969) was an accountant and political figure in Newfoundland. He represented Bell Island in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1928 to 1932 as a Liberal. He was born in St. John's, and educated at Saint Bonaventure's College. He worked on Bell Island for the Dominion Iron and Steel Company. Greene served as a Commissioner of Agriculture. He was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1932. During his time in college, Greene set a Newfoundland record in the half mile; he later coached track and field at Saint Bonaventure's College. After leaving politics, he was employed in auditing the accounts for various firms in Newfoundland. He died in St. John's in 1969. His uncle Daniel Joseph Greene served briefly as Newfoundland premier. Bell Island is an island that is part of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Canada's easternmost province. With an area of , it is by far the largest island in Conception Bay, a large bay in the southeast of the island of Newfoundland. The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly () is the Unicameralism, unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building (Newfoundland and Labrador), Confederation Building in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the lieutenant governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, in the name of the King of Canada. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. Saint Bonaventure's College
St. Bonaventure's College (commonly called St. Bon's) is an independent kindergarten to grade 12 Roman Catholic Church, Catholic School in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is located in the St. John's Ecclesiastical District, adjacent to the Roman Catholic Basilica of St. John the Baptist. The school is named in honour of one of the Doctors of the Catholic Church, St. Bonaventure. Early history In 1855, there was a public auction to sell more than 30,000 building stones from Waterford, Ireland, which had been imported to build the local penitentiary. The Catholic Bishop of the day, Right Rev. John Thomas Mullock, took advantage of plans to build a smaller penal institution and purchased sufficient surplus stones to construct a Franciscan monastery. In April 1857 the bishop laid the cornerstone of the college named after the Franciscan Order's most scholarly and famous theologian, St. Bonaventure.
