Joseph Fitzgibbon
Joseph Fitzgibbon (May 5, 1881 – December 17, 1960) was a politician in Newfoundland. He represented St. John's City West in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1928 to 1932 as a Liberal. The son of Edmund Fitzgibbon, he was born in St. John's and was educated at St. Patrick's Hall. He worked as an auctioneer and real estate agent. In 1923, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Newfoundland assembly; Fitzgibbon was unsuccessful again in 1924. He was elected to St. John's municipal council in 1925 and served as deputy mayor. He was elected to the Newfoundland assembly in 1928. Fitzgibbon was defeated when he ran for reelection in Placentia and St. Mary's in 1932. He returned to municipal politics and was elected to St. John's council three more times. From 1952 to 1953, he was president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities. Dominion Of Newfoundland
Newfoundland was a British dominion in eastern North America, today the modern Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was established on 26 September 1907, and confirmed by the Balfour Declaration of 1926 and the Statute of Westminster of 1931. It included the island of Newfoundland, and Labrador on the continental mainland. Newfoundland was one of the original dominions within the meaning of the Balfour Declaration and accordingly enjoyed a constitutional status equivalent to the other dominions of the time. In 1934, Newfoundland became the only dominion to give up its self-governing status, which ended 79 years of self-government. The abolition of self-government came about because of a crisis in Newfoundland's public finances in 1932. Newfoundland House Of Assembly
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is a political party in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The party is the provincial branch, and affiliate of the federal Liberal Party of Canada. It has served as the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador since December 14, 2015. The NL Liberals were re-elected to a majority government in the 2021 provincial election. Origins The party originated in 1948 as the Newfoundland Confederate Association. At this time, Newfoundland was being governed by a Commission of Government appointed by the Government of the United Kingdom. The Knights of Columbus (K of C) is a global Catholic fraternal service order founded by Michael J. McGivney on March 29, 1882. Membership is limited to practicing Catholic men.
