Joseph Ernest Sutton de Clonard (1765, Paris – 28 January 1816, Paris) was an early 19th-century French dramatist. Attached to the administration of the navy, his plays were presented in Bordeaux as well as at the Théâtre de l'Ambigu, the Théâtre du Vaudeville and the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris. Théâtre Du Vaudeville
The Théâtre du Vaudeville was a theatre company in Paris. It opened on 12 January 1792 on rue de Chartres. Its directors, Piis and Barré, mainly put on "petites pièces mêlées de couplets sur des airs connus", including vaudevilles. After the theatre on the rue de Chartres burned down in 1838, the Vaudeville temporarily based itself on boulevard de Bonne-Nouvelle before in 1841 setting up in the Salle de la Bourse on the Place de la Bourse in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, 2e arrondissement. This building was demolished in 1869. Eugène Labiche and Henri Meilhac put on several of their works there, and it also hosted Jules Verne's play ''Onze jours de siège'' (1861). Other writers whose works were put on there were Edmond Gondinet, Alexandre Bisson, Théophile Marion Dumersan, Jean-François Bayard, Narcisse Fournier and Gaston Arman de Caillavet. Théâtre Des Variétés
The Théâtre des Variétés is a theatre and "salle de spectacles" at 7–8, boulevard Montmartre, 2nd arrondissement, in Paris. It was declared a monument historique in 1974. History It owes its creation to the theatre director Mademoiselle Montansier (Marguerite Brunet). Imprisoned for debt in 1803 and frowned upon by the government, a decree of 1806 ordered her company to leave the Théâtre du Palais-Royal which then bore the name of "Variétés". The decree's aim was to move out Montansier's troupe to make room for the company from the neighbouring Théâtre-Français, which had stayed empty even as the Variétés-Montansier had enjoyed immense public favour. Vaudeville (song)
A vaudeville is a French satirical poem or song born of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its name is lent to the French theatrical entertainment '' comédie en vaudeville'' of the 19th and 20th century. From these vaudeville took its name. The earliest vaudeville was the ''vau de vire'', a Norman song of the 15th century, named after the valley of Vire. During the 16th century emerged a style in urban France called the ''voix de ville'' (city voice), whose name may have been a pun on ''vau de vire'', and which was also satirical. The two styles converged and in the 17th and 18th century the term "vaudeville" came to be used for songs satirizing political and court events. Joseph Servières
Joseph Servières (20 July 1781 – 3 February 1826online archive of the City of Paris, reconstructed civil status, fiche n° 6/5/ref>) was an early 19th-century French playwright. Biography Servieres made good studies in his hometown and came very young to Paris, where upon his arrival he gave several Play (theatre), theatre plays which had some success. He was noticed by Lucien Bonaparte, then interior minister, but soon fell into Napoleon's disfavor. In 1807, he married Eugénie Charen, the stepdaughter of the painter Lethière, who was herself a distinguished artist. He then accompanied to Italy his stepfather who had been appointed director of the French School in Rome, where he met Lucien, a longtime friend and confidant of Lethière. Servières returned to Paris in 1812 and obtained a position in the public treasury. Under the Restoration, he was appointed a public auditor at the Court of Audit on 8 September 1818. Couplet
A couplet is a pair of successive lines of metre in poetry. A couplet usually consists of two successive lines that rhyme and have the same metre. A couplet may be formal (closed) or run-on (open). In a formal (or closed) couplet, each of the two lines is end-stopped, implying that there is a grammatical pause at the end of a line of verse. Pierre Athanase Larousse (23 October 18173 January 1875) was a French grammarian, lexicographer and encyclopaedist. He published many of the outstanding educational and reference works of 19th-century France, including the 15-volume '' Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle''. Early life Pierre Larousse was born in Toucy, where his father was a blacksmith. At the age of sixteen he won a scholarship at the teaching school in Versailles. Four years later, he returned to Toucy to teach in a primary school, but became frustrated by the archaic and rigid teaching methods.
