Joseph Carter Abbott (July 15, 1825October 8, 1881) was a Union Army colonel during the American Civil War who was awarded the grade of brevet (military), brevet brigadier general (United States), brigadier general of volunteers and a United States Republican Party, Republican United States Senator from the state of North Carolina between 1868 and 1871. During his career in private life he was a lawyer, newspaper editor and businessman. He also served as collector of the port of Wilmington, inspector of posts along the eastern line of the southern coast during the Rutherford B. Hayes Administration, and special agent of the United States Treasury Department. Joseph Chris Carter (born March 7, 1960) is an American former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) as an outfielder and first baseman for the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, and San Francisco Giants. Carter hit a walk-off home run to win the 1993 World Series for the Blue Jays, their second consecutive championship. Joseph Henry Carter (1857–1930) was a leading British veterinarian, serving as President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1913/14 and 1920. Life He was born on 5 May 1857, in Bradford, Yorkshire to Joseph Shepherd Carter (died 1905), a farmer's son who trained as a vet at the main London Veterinary School. He was the second of three sons, all of whom became vets. He trained both in London and in Edinburgh (at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Royal Dick Veterinary College). From 1901 to 1913 he was a member of Burnley Town Council, where his veterinary practice was based. On this Town Council he served as Chairman of the Highways and Sewage Committee. During both the Second Boer War and First World War he served as a Veterinary Transport Officer in South Africa. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1905. Joseph Coleman Carter (born 23 December 1941) is an American archaeologist, author, and academic specializing in Greek art and the study of ancient Greek colonies. He is the founder and director of the Institute of Classical Archaeology, a research unit associated with the University of Texas at Austin, and the non-profit Center for the Study of Ancient Territories. Education He earned a BA in Classics from Amherst College in 1963. He completed his MA and PhD from Princeton University in 1967 and 1971 respectively. Joseph Henry Carter (27 July 1899 – 7 January 1977) was an English footballer who played at inside-forward. He won three England caps, scoring four goals. Carter won an FA Cup winner's medal with West Bromwich Albion in 1931, also helping the team win promotion to Division One in the same season. In September 1931 he became the first ever Albion player to be sent off at The Hawthorns. He played in the 1935 FA Cup Final when Albion finished as runners-up to Sheffield Wednesday.
