Joseph Capel Smyth
Joseph Capel Smyth (February 1838 – 14 August 1914) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Smyth was born in 1830 in Inch, County Cork, Ireland to Jonas Smyth and his wife Mary (née Capel) and educated at Riordan's Classical School, Cloyne. When he was around 31 years of age he travelled to Queensland and, in conjunction with Thomas McIlwraith, managed several properties. He later became a Company director of the Darling Downs and Western Land Co and the Queensland Investment and Land Mortgage Co. Appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council in May 1882, Smyth served for twenty-eight years before resigning in July 1910. Queensland Legislative Council
The Queensland Legislative Council was the upper house of the parliament in the Australian state of Queensland. It was a fully nominated body which first took office on 1 May 1860. It was abolished by the Constitution Amendment Act 1921, which took effect on 23 March 1922. Consequently, the Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the only unicameral state Parliament in Australia. Two territories, the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, also maintain unicameral parliaments. Most of the early members of the Council came from wealthy families, were well educated and were born in England. Absenteeism was a problem in the early years, with some members returning to England, being absent for several years. Thomas McIlwraith
Sir Thomas McIlwraith (17 May 1835 – 17 July 1900) was for many years the dominant figure of colonial politics in Queensland. He was Premier of Queensland from 1879 to 1883, again in 1888, and for a third time in 1893. In common with most politicians of his era, McIlwraith was an influential businessman, who combined his parliamentary career with a prosperous involvement in the pastoral industry. Early life Thomas McIlwraith was born in Ayr, Scotland, in 1835, one of four sons of John McIlwraith, plumber and shipowner, and his wife Janet Hamilton ''née'' Howat. In modern parlance, a colony is a territory subject to a form of foreign rule. Though dominated by the foreign colonizers, colonies remain separate from the administration of the original country of the colonizers, the '' metropolitan state'' (or "mother country"). In Australia, a station is a large landholding used for producing livestock, predominantly cattle or sheep, that needs an extensive range of grazing land. The owner of a station is called a pastoralist or a grazier, corresponding to the North American term " rancher". Originally ''station'' referred to the homestead – the owner's house and associated outbuildings of a pastoral property, but it now generally refers to the whole holding.
