Joseph C. Wolff
Joseph C. Wolff (January 19, 1849 in Besançon, France – November 26, 1896 in New York City) was an American lawyer and politician from New York (state), New York. Life The family emigrated to the United States in 1855, and settled in New York City. He attended the grammar schools. In 1864, he enlisted in the 2nd Regiment New York Volunteer Cavalry, 2nd New York Light Cavalry Regiment as a bugler, and took part in the battles of Battle of Opequon, Opequon, Battle of Cedar Creek, Cedar Creek and Battle of Five Forks, Five Forks. He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1874, was admitted to the bar, and practiced law in New York City. Wolff was a member of the New York State Assembly (New York Co., 16th D.) in 116th New York State Legislature, 1893; and of the New York State Senate (11th D.) in 117th New York State Legislature, 1894 and 118th New York State Legislature, 1895. 118th New York State Legislature
The 118th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 2 to May 16, 1895, during the first year of Levi P. Morton's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1846, 32 Senators and 128 assemblymen were elected in single-seat districts; senators for a two-year term, assemblymen for a one-year term. The senatorial districts were made up of entire counties, except New York County (nine districts), Kings County (five districts) and Erie County (two districts). The Assembly districts were made up of entire towns, or city wards, forming a contiguous area, all within the same county. A Constitutional Convention met at the State Capitol in Albany from May 8 to September 29, 1894.
