Joseph C. Shell
Joseph Claude Shell, Sr. (September 7, 1918 – April 7, 2008) was a Republican Party (United States), Republican politician from California who served in the California State Assembly from 1953 to 1963 from the California's 58th State Assembly district, 58th district. He later served on the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board. In 1962 California gubernatorial election, 1962 he was a failed primary candidate for Governor of California. Shell attended the University of Southern California, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and was captain of the 1939 USC Trojans football, USC football team which won the Rose Bowl Game, Rose Bowl that year. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His second wife was Mary K. Shell, a former member of the Kern County Board of Supervisors and the first female Mayor of Bakersfield, California, Mayor of Bakersfield. The mayor of Bakersfield is the elected leader for the city of Bakersfield, California. Prior to 1957, the mayor was appointed by the city council and the head of the executive branch. After that time, the mayor was split into two positions. The city manager would be appointed by the city council and run the executive branch. The Rose Bowl Game is an annual American college football bowl game, usually played on January 1 (New Year's Day) at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
