Joe Burke (baseball Executive)
Joseph Roy Burke (December 8, 1923 – May 12, 1992) was an American front office executive in Major League Baseball who served as general manager or club president of the Kansas City Royals for almost 18 years during the most successful period in that expansion team's early history. Burke was executive vice president and general manager of the Royals from the middle of the 1974 season through October 1981. He then served as club president until his death on May 12, 1992. During his tenure, Burke was general manager of the Royals' first American League championship team, the 1980 edition, then was president of the 1985 Royals, who won the franchise's first World Series title. In addition to those two pennant-winners, the Royals won American League West Division championships in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1981 (second half of a split season) and 1984. Joe Burk
Joseph William Burk (January 19, 1914 – January 13, 2008) was an American oarsman and coach. Raised in Delanco Township, New Jersey, he graduated from Moorestown High School in 1930. At the University of Pennsylvania, Burk rowed in the varsity boats. After graduating in 1934, he began racing in the single scull (1x), a one-man boat. Burk won 46 consecutive races in the single scull from 1937 to 1940, inclusive. He was the U.S. and Canadian champion for those four years. In 1938, he won the Diamond Challenge Sculls (the premier singles sculls event) at the Henley Royal Regatta when he set a Henley course record of 8:02, which was to stand for 27 years. He won Diamonds again in 1939, beating Roger Verey in the final. He became known as the "world's greatest oarsman", and at the end of the 1939 season, Burk was voted the James E. Joseph Burke (March 2, 1888 – January 31, 1990) was the longest-tenured judge in the history of the Illinois Appellate Court.Chicago Sun-Times Article, February 1, 1990, pg. 70, Section: News Judge Burke was born in Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland in 1888, son of Patrick Burke. His family emigrated to America in 1895, going through Ellis Island and then on to Chicago where they settled on the Near West Side. Burke worked as a newsboy, selling the Chicago Daily News for eight years. He graduated from DePaul Law School in 1909 and began practicing law in 1911. In 1917 he enlisted in the United States Army. After the war, he organized the American Legion's Blackhawk Post and was its first commander. Burke was elected to the municipal court in 1922. In 1930 he was appointed a circuit judge, and was permanently assigned to the Illinois Appellate Court in 1939.
