Joseph Balmer
Joseph Balmer (December 26, 1914 – June 4, 2006) was a noted Swiss 20th century historian and expert on Native Americana. Early life Balmer was born in Ebikon, Lucerne to Peter Balmer of Flühli, Lucerne and Josephine Magdalena, née Schwerzmann. In 1920, his family moved to Horw, Lucerne where Balmer attended elementary school for six years, following his secondary schooling (Swiss equivalent of the American high school) in the city of Lucerne. In 1929 his family moved again, to Zürich, Switzerland's largest city where his father found employment in an import/export firm primarily dealing with oriental carpets. Balmer would briefly find part-time work at the same firm where his father worked. In 1930, at the age of 16, Balmer entered a mercantile apprenticeship with the COOP Konkordia Schweiz and underwent 3 years' training as an accountant, graduating in 1933. Mari Susette Sandoz (May 11, 1896 – March 10, 1966) was a Nebraska novelist, biographer, lecturer, and teacher. Laton Alton Huffman
Laton Alton Huffman (October 31, 1854 – February 28, 1931) was an American photographer of Frontier and Native American life. Born in Winneshiek County, Iowa, he spent most of his life photographing the area around his Montana home. Having initially worked at Fort Keogh, he started to sell prints of his glass plate negatives. Frank Bennett Fiske
Frank Bennett Fiske (June 11, 1883 – July 18, 1952) was an early-20th-century photographer primarily active among the Lakota (Sioux) on Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North and South Dakota. Early life and education Fiske was born June 11, 1883, at Fort Bennett in Dakota Territory, son of George E. Fiske, a soldier at the post, and of Louise, née Otter. The elder Fiske originally hailed from Baltimore MD, had been trained as an artist working as a set painter in theatres, spending some time at sea traveling multiple times to South America and enlisting in the early 1870s into the US military, first getting posted to Arizona Territory and later to Fort Sully and Fort Bennett in Dakota Territory. Orlando Scott Goff
Orlando Scott Goff (September 10, 1843 – October 17, 1916) was a 19th-century photographer of the American West. Early life Orlando Scott Goff was born in Middletown, Connecticut on September 10, 1843, the youngest of five children of Alfred Goff, shoemaker and Adaline, née Giddings. In his late teens Goff was apprenticed to learn the trade of carriage maker, but after the outbreak of the American Civil War he enlisted in October 1861 at the age of 18 with the 10th Connecticut Regiment Infantry of the Union Army seeing service in the Carolinas, Florida and Virginia. On October 13, 1864 Goff was wounded at the Battle of Darbytown Road near Richmond, Virginia. He spent two months at a military hospital at Fort Monroe, Virginia and upon his release, he was promoted to 1st sergeant and later to 2nd lieutenant.
