Joseph B. Teas
Joseph Bartlett Teas (July 4, 1800 - February 23, 1872) was an American lawyer and minister from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He served in the legislatures of three Territories of the United States without ever moving. Teas was born July 4, 1800, in Nashville, Tennessee. At the age of 13, during the War of 1812 he accompanied his father to the front and was allowed to serve as a teamster, earning a land grant and a pension. After the war, he moved to Beardstown, Illinois, then to Fort Edwards, where he worked for the U.S. Army doing civil surveying of Illinois and what would become Wisconsin Territory. He and his brother moved to Iowa ''ca.'' 1833. He married Julia Ann (called "Juliann") Edwards in 1836. Prior to becoming an attorney, Teas (like his brother George W. Teas) had been a Methodist minister; and both Teas brothers would later return to that vocation, although other accounts only say that George did so. ''The Hawk Eye'' is a general-circulation newspaper based in Burlington, Iowa, United States, and bills itself as "''Iowa's Oldest Newspaper''." History The newspaper traces its roots to the ''Wisconsin Territorial Gazette and Burlington Advertiser'', which was established July 10, 1837, by James Clarke and Cyrus Jacobs. Clarke and Jacobs moved to Burlington from Belmont, Wisconsin, when the capital of the Wisconsin Territory was moved to Burlington. The pair did printing work for the territorial government, and were aligned with the Democratic Party. In 1838, a separate Iowa Territory was created, and Burlington was named its first capital. The Territory of Iowa was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from July 4, 1838, until December 28, 1846, when the southeastern portion of the territory was admitted to the Union as the state of Iowa. The remainder of the territory would have no organized territorial government until the Minnesota Territory was organized on March 3, 1849. Iowa District
The Iowa District was a region of north-central North America west of the Mississippi River claimed by the United States. From June 28, 1834, to July 4, 1838, it was part of the Michigan Territory and, later, the Wisconsin Territory. It included not only the area which became the state of Iowa, but parts of what would become Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. In September 1834, at an extra session of the Sixth Legislative Assembly of Michigan, the Iowa District was divided into two counties. A border was drawn due west from the lower end of Rock Island in the Mississippi River.
