Joseph-Enoil Michaud
Joseph-Enoil Michaud, (September 26, 1888 – May 23, 1967) was a Canadian politician. Born in Saint-Antonin, Quebec, Michaud represented Madawaska County in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1917 to 1933 as a Liberal. He served as a minister without portfolio in the province's Executive Council from 1920 to 1921 and 1923 to 1925. Michaud was also mayor of Edmundston from 1919 to 1920 and from 1932 to 1936. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada representing the New Brunswick riding of Restigouche—Madawaska in a 1933 by-election. A Liberal, he was re-elected in 1935 and 1940. Saint-Antonin () is a city in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec, Canada, a few kilometres south of the city of Rivière-du-Loup, in Rivière-du-Loup Regional County Municipality. The municipality is named after Louis-Antonin or Antoine Proulx (1810-1896), priest of Fraserville (Rivière-du-Loup) and was founded in 1856. On November 1, 2014, Saint-Antonin was changed from a parish municipality to a (regular) municipality. 1940 Canadian Federal Election
The 1940 Canadian federal election was held March 26, 1940, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 19th Parliament of Canada. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's Liberal Party was re-elected to their second consecutive majority government. The election was overshadowed by the Second World War, which caused many Canadians to rally around the government. In response to this, the Conservative Party of Robert Manion ran on a platform advocating the creation of an all-party national unity government and ran under the name "National Government" in this election. Though Manion was personally opposed to conscription, the Liberals faced intense pressure in Quebec on the question and promised not to institute the measure. This promise was to haunt the Liberals as they faced increasing pressure from the military and especially from English Canada to bring in the measure.
