Josep Gausachs
Josep Gausachs Armengol (1889–1959), better known as Josep Gausachs or José Gausachs, was a Catalan artist active in Spain, France and the Dominican Republic. Early years Born in 1889 in Barcelona, Spain, Gausachs had a difficult childhood. A medical procedure left his face partially paralyzed at the age of 11. Later in his adolescence, he lost sight in one eye as the result of an accident. Gausachs studied art at the Escola de Baixas and the Escola de la Llotja, both in Barcelona. He began participating in exhibitions in 1910, and had his first solo exhibition in 1911 in Barcelona. Career in Europe After completing his studies Gausachs moved to Paris, where he benefited from contact with such artists as: Modigliani, Juan Gris, De Chirico, Picasso, Albert Marquet, Braque and Marc Chagall. Surrealism
Surrealism is a cultural movement that developed in Europe in the aftermath of World War I in which artists depicted unnerving, illogical scenes and developed techniques to allow the unconscious mind to express itself. Its aim was, according to leader André Breton, to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality", or ''surreality.'' Jaime Colson
Jaime Antonio Gumercindo González Colson (13 January 190120 November 1975) was a Dominican modernist painter, writer, and playwright born in Tubagua, Puerto Plata in 1901. He is remembered as one of the most important Dominican artists of the 20th century, and as one of the leading figures of the modernist movement in 20th century Dominican art, along with Yoryi Morel, Dario Suro, and Celeste Woss y Gil. Early years and education Born in Santiago de los Caballeros, she attended Escuela Ercilia Pepín and in her teenage years studied art under Yoryi Morel at his self-named Academia Yoryi. Gilberto Hernández Ortega
Gilberto Hernández Ortega (21 December 1923 – 23 October 1979) was an artist from the Dominican Republic. He is considered a leading painter of his generation. Early life and education He was born in Baní, Peravia Province, in 1923 but was raised in Santo Domingo. He was great-grandson of Pierre André Frier, a Frenchman. Ortega first studied art under Celeste Woss y Gil at her private academy. Undecided about his career, he studied engineering for more than two years before committing to pursuing painting. He enrolled in the National School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Woss y Gil once again, as well as Josep Gausachs and George Hausdorf. Ortega was particularly influenced by Gausachs, maintaining a close relationship with the older artist until Gausachs's death in 1959. Ada Balcácer
Ada Balcácer (born 16 June 1930) is a Dominican multimedia visual artist whose artistic production ranges from painted works, textile designs, murals, and printmaking. Known for her compositional themes of Caribbean mysticism and naturalism, Balcácer has won several national and international awards. Life Balcácer was born in Santo Domingo, on June 16, 1930, and grew up during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. Her early childhood years were spent between Santo Domingo and San Juan de la Maguana, where she developed a love for botany, science, and folklore. When Balcácer was 16, during a parade in San Juan de la Maguana, an accident while riding a horse led to a fractured wrist that later developed gangrene and obliged the doctors to amputate her left arm. Eugenio Granell
Eugenio Fernández Granell (28 November 1912 – 24 October 2001), recognised as the last Spanish Surrealist, was an artist, professor, musician and writer. As a political activist in the early 20th century, Granell was characterised by his outspoken support of Democratic Socialism and opposition to Totalitarianism. Eugenio joined the Trotskyists during his military service and eventually became a prominent member of POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista / Worker's Party of Marxist Unification) in 1935. Following the Civil War, Granell fled to France where he was interned in concentration camps however after having escaped, Eugenio then sought exile in the Americas. As a Surrealist Artist, Eugenio's work is principally characterised by its bright and vivid colours that explore nature and the indigenous symbolism of the Americas.
