Josef Vejvoda
Josef Vejvoda (born 13 July 1945, Prague, Czechoslovakia) is a Czech composer, percussionist, conductor and bandleader. His first notable appearance took place in 1963, when he performed with Jiří Stivín's Jazztet at the Theatre on the Balustrade. In 1967, he was awarded Laureate of the Prague Jazz International Contest of Young Soloists. He graduated from Prague Conservatory in 1970. He recorded albums with Karel Velebný's SHQ, with the Big Band of the Český rozhlas (Czech Radio), with Laco Déczi, with Emil Viklický, as well as with several musicians from abroad. ''A Meeting To Build A Dream On'', an album with recording of a performance with Benny Bailey at the Přerov Jazz Festival, was awarded ''The Best Jazz Album'' of 2001 by the Český rozhlas. Emil Viklický
Emil Viklický (born 23 November 1948) is a Czech Jazz piano, jazz pianist and composer. Career Viklický was born in Olomouc. He graduated from Palacký University in 1971 with a degree in mathematics. As a student, he devoted a lot of time to playing jazz piano, and in 1974, he was awarded the prize for best soloist at the Czechoslovak Amateur Jazz Festival. The same year, he joined Karel Velebný's SHQ ensemble. In 1976, he was a prizewinner at a jazz improvisation competition in Lyon, and his composition "Green Satin" () won first prize in a music conservatory competition in Monaco. In 1985, his composition "Cacharel" won second prize in the same competition. In 1977, he was awarded a year's scholarship to study composition and arrangement with Herb Pomeroy at Berklee College of Music in Boston. "Beer Barrel Polka", originally in Czech , also known as "The Barrel Polka", "Roll Out the Barrel", or "Rosamunde", is a 1927 polka composed by Czech musician Jaromír Vejvoda. Lyrics were added in 1934, subsequently gaining worldwide popularity during World War II as a drinking song. History In 1927, the music for the polka was composed by the Czech musician Jaromír Vejvoda. Eduard Ingriš wrote the first arrangement of the piece, after Vejvoda came up with the melody and sought Ingriš's help in refining it. At that time, it was played without lyrics as (). Jaromír Vejvoda
Jaromír Vejvoda (28 March 1902 – 13 November 1988) was a Czechs, Czech composer. He is best known as the author of the "Beer Barrel Polka". Life and work Vejvoda was born and died in Prague-Zbraslav. From 1936 to 1960, he lived in Vrané nad Vltavou, after he married the local native Božena Zamrazilová. He learned to play the violin, fiddle and flugelhorn in a band led by his father. Later he played these instruments in a military band. He started to compose in the 1920s while he worked as a bartender in a pub owned by his father-in-law. In 1929 he wrote the ''Modřanská polka'' named after Modřany, a suburb of Prague where it was played the first time. This catchy tune became a hit and allowed Vejvoda to pursue music as a full-time professional. It was published in 1934 with lyrics ''Škoda lásky, kterou jsem tobě dala...'' Ernest Harold "Benny" Bailey (August 13, 1925 – April 14, 2005) was an American jazz trumpeter. Biography A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Bailey briefly studied flute and piano before turning to trumpet. He attended the Cleveland Conservatory of Music. He was influenced by Cleveland native Tadd Dameron and had a significant influence on other Cleveland musicians, such as Albert Ayler, Bob Cunningham, Bobby Few, Bill Hardman, and Frank Wright. Bailey played with Tony Lovano, father of Joe Lovano. In the early 1940s he worked with Bull Moose Jackson and Scatman Crothers. He later worked with Dizzy Gillespie and toured with Lionel Hampton. During a European tour with Hampton he remained in Europe and spent time in Sweden, where he worked with Harry Arnold's big band.
