Josef Mukařovský
Josef Mukařovský (6 April 1851, Mainz – 1 November 1921, Klatovy) was a Czech painter and illustrator. Biography He was born in Germany, to the family of a military officer stationed there. When he was eight, they returned to Prague. He attended schools there and in Vienna, and graduated from a painting academy; possibly in either city. After 1870, he contributed illustrations to various magazines, notably ''Světozor''; publishing over 400 in the course of fourteen years. His other works included decorating the staircase at the . In the 1880s, he visited Munich. He eventually settled there, started a family, and became involved in its cultural life. There, he did illustrations for German magazines, and acted as host to many German and Czech cultural figures; being given the nickname "Muki". __NOTOC__ ''Světozor'' ("Seeing the World") was a Czech language, Czech-language illustrated magazine published in 19th and 20th century. History and profile ''Světozor'' was created by Pavel Josef Šafařík in 1834. Šafařík was inspired by the British penny press and the German ''Das Pfennig-Magazin, Pfennig-Magazin''. The newspaper, trying to entertain the readers with curiosities, did not incite much interest and closed down in two years. In 1867 the magazine was reestablished by František Skrejšovský (1837–1902), an entrepreneur and politician. A substantial portion of the weekly was dedicated to the literature and the arts. Since 1899 for more than 30 years the magazine was owned by the publishing house of Jan Otto. Between 1933 and 1939 the magazine was owned by leftist journalist and photographer Pavel Altschul (1900–1944). Karl May
Karl Friedrich May ( , ; 25 February 1842 – 30 March 1912) was a German author. He is best known for his novels of travels and adventures, set in the American Old West, the Orient, the Middle East, Latin America, China and Germany. He also wrote poetry, a play, and composed music. He was a proficient player of several musical instruments. Many of his works were adapted for film, theatre, audio dramas and comics. Later in his career, May turned to philosophical and spiritual genres. He is one of the best-selling German writers of all time, with about 200,000,000 copies sold worldwide. The National Library of the Czech Republic () is the central library of the Czech Republic. It is directed by the Ministry of Culture (Czech Republic), Ministry of Culture. The library's main building is located in the historical Clementinum building in the centre of Prague, where approximately half of its books are kept. The other half of the collection is stored in the district of Hostivař. The National Library is the biggest library in the Czech Republic, housing around 6 million documents.
