Josef Lewkowicz
Josef Lewkowicz (15 March 1926 – 26 December 2024) was a Polish-born Holocaust survivor and Nazi hunter. Holocaust Lewkowicz was born in a shtetl in southeast Poland in 1926. At the age of 13, he witnessed the Nazi occupation of Poland. By the time he was 16, he had been separated from his mother and siblings, whom he never saw again. Together with his father, Symcha, Lewkowicz was requisitioned for forced labor and entered the concentration camp system in 1942. His father later died in the Flossenbürg concentration camp. Lewkowicz was sent to the Kraków-Płaszów concentration camp operated by the SS in Płaszów, a southern suburb of Kraków, in the General Governorate of German-occupied Poland. The camp was then under the command of Amon Göth, later known as the "Butcher of Płaszów", whose brutality was depicted in the film ''Schindler's List''. Holocaust Survivor
Holocaust survivors are people who survived the Holocaust, defined as the persecution and attempted annihilation of the Jews by Nazi Germany and Collaboration with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, its collaborators before and during World War II in Europe and North Africa. There is no universally accepted definition of the term, and it has been applied variously to Jews who survived the war in German-occupied Europe or other Axis powers, Axis territories, as well as to those who fled to Allies (World War II), Allied and Neutral powers during World War II, neutral countries before or during the war. A prisoner of war (POW) is a person held captive by a belligerent power during or immediately after an armed conflict. The earliest recorded usage of the phrase "prisoner of war" dates back to 1610. Genocide
Genocide is violence that targets individuals because of their membership of a group and aims at the destruction of a people. Raphael Lemkin, who first coined the term, defined genocide as "the destruction of a nation or of an ethnic group" by means such as "the disintegration of [its] political and social institutions, of [its] cultural genocide, culture, linguicide, language, national feelings, religious persecution, religion, and [its] economic existence". Identification of inmates in Nazi concentration camps (operated by Nazi Germany in its own territory and in parts of German-occupied Europe) was performed mostly with identification numbers marked on clothing, or later, tattooed on the skin. More specialized identification in Nazi concentration camps was done with badges on clothing and armbands. Numbers A practice was established to tattoo the inmates with identification numbers. Hidden Children During The Holocaust
Children (mainly Jewish) were hidden in various different ways during the Holocaust in order to save them from the Nazis. Most were hidden in Poland, though some were hidden in Western Europe. Not all attempts to save them were successful; for instance, German Jewish refugee Anne Frank was eventually captured in Amsterdam.
