Jose R. Gullas Halad Museum
JRG Halad Museum is a musically-themed museum in Cebu City, Philippines that pays homage to the musical heritage of Cebu. Location Located along V. Gullas St. (former Manalili) and D. Jakosalem St. Cebu City, the old building of The Freeman Newspaper has been converted into a museum which houses Cebuano and Visayan musical treasures and memorabilia. History Founded by Jose "Dodong" R. Gullas, the Halad Museum was inaugurated on January 12, 2010, and opened to the public on February 2, 2010. With the founder's support, reviving works of long-forgotten composers was achieved via concerts of an award-winning university-based choir, the UV Chorale of which the first of the ''Halad'' concerts came about in 2007. In that event, a group of composers were honored posthumously including Ben Zubiri, composer of ''Matud Nila'', and Vicente Rubi, composer of Kasadya Ning Taknaa. Wenceslao "Ben" Zubiri (September 28, 1911 – November 9, 1969), who was also known as Iyo Karpo was a Cebuano composer, actor, and media personality in the Philippines. The University of the Visayas (UV) is a private institution located in Cebu City, Philippines. It is the first school in the province of Cebu to attain university status. History Vicente Gullas (1898–1970) founded the University of the Visayas in 1919 aiming to educate young people from average-income families. It was initially called the Visayan Institute, and occupied two rooms rented at the City Intermediate School. The number of students had increased from 37 in 1919 to 87 in 1920, and kept growing, but Gullas could not find a permanent building for the institute and kept moving over various locations in Cebu, borrowing auxiliary facilities from other schools nearby, such as physical education grounds of the Cebu Normal University, Cebu Normal School and the public library near Fuente Osmeña.
