Jorge Martínez Boero
Jorge Martínez Boero (23 May 1937 – 11 June 2004) was an Argentine racing driver. He competed in Turismo Carretera, winning the championship in the 1982 season. Martínez Boero was the father of Jorge Andrés Boero who was killed during the first stage of the 2012 Dakar Rally The 2012 Dakar Rally was the 34th running of the event. Turismo Carretera ( Road racing, lit., ''Road Touring'') is a popular stock car racing series in Argentina, and the 2nd oldest auto racing series still active in the world. The series is organized by Asociación Corredores de Turismo Carretera. History The series was established under the Argentine Automobile Club as the "Campeonato Argentino de Velocidad" in 1937 and re-named Turismo Carretera two years later, however its' roots can be traced back to the loosely-organised ''Grands Prix de Carretera'' of the 1910s. The 2012 Dakar Rally was the 34th running of the event. It was held in South America for the fourth successive time. Summary By 17 March 2011, Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner announced that the start would be in Mar del Plata, Argentina, the first stage would end in Bahía Blanca. The course would later cross the provinces of La Pampa, Mendoza, San Juan, La Rioja and Catamarca before crossing to Chile and finally ending in Peru. On 9 January 2011, Peruvian press announced that Peru would host the three final stages of the 2012 Dakar Rally, with Lima, the Peruvian capital, hosting the awards ceremony.
