Joost is a male Dutch first name. It derives from the name Jodocus, which can ultimately be traced back to St. Judoc, a Breton saint of the 7th century: Jodocus → Josse → Joos → Joost (the addition of an end-t is a peculiarity of the Dutch language, especially some local dialects). Breton Language
Breton (, ; or in Morbihan) is a Southwestern Brittonic language of the Celtic language family spoken in Brittany, part of modern-day France. It is the only Celtic language still widely in use on the European mainland, albeit as a member of the insular branch instead of the continental grouping. Breton was brought from Great Britain to Armorica (the ancient name for the coastal region that includes the Brittany peninsula) by migrating Britons during the Early Middle Ages, making it an Insular Celtic language. Joost Van Den Vondel
Joost van den Vondel (; 17 November 1587 – 5 February 1679) was a Dutch poet, writer and playwright. He is considered the most prominent Dutch poet and playwright of the 17th century. His plays are the ones from that period that are still most frequently performed, and his epic ''Joannes de Boetgezant'' (1662), on the life of John the Baptist, has been called the greatest Dutch epic. Vondel's theatrical works were regularly performed until the 1960s. The most visible was the annual performance, on New Year's Day from 1637 to 1968, of ''Gijsbrecht van Aemstel''. Vondel remained productive until a very old age. Risto Joost (born 22 June 1980) is an Estonian Conducting, conductor and operatic countertenor. Life Born in Tallinn, Joost has been intensively involved with music since the age of six. He attended the special school for music in Tallinn. From 1986 to 1998 he studied choir conducting at the Tallinn Academy of Music with Anneli Mäeots and from 1998 to 2002 at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Oskar Joost (9 June 1898 – 29 May 1941) was a German musician, who played violin, tenor saxophone and clarinet, as well as directing a dance orchestra. Biography Joost was born into a musical family in Wissembourg, Alsace on 9 June 1898. Edwin David Joost (June 5, 1916April 12, 2011) was an American professional baseball player and manager. He played as a shortstop in Major League Baseball for all or portions of 17 seasons between 1936 and 1955. In , Joost became the third and last manager in the 54-year history of the Philadelphia Athletics. Under Joost, the A's finished last in the American League and lost over 100 games. Joost Heystek van der Westhuizen (20 February 1971 – 6 February 2017) was a South African professional rugby union player who made 89 appearances in test matches for the national team, scoring 38 tries. He mostly played as a scrum-half and participated in three Rugby World Cups, most notably in the 1995 tournament, which was won by South Africa. Johannes Jacobus Willebrordus "Joost" Zwagerman (18 November 1963 – 8 September 2015) was a Dutch writer, poet and essayist. Among his teachers was the novelist Oek de Jong. Joost Swarte (born 24 December 1947 in Heemstede) is a Dutch cartoonist and graphic designer. He is best known for his ligne claire or ''clear line'' style of drawing, a term he coined. Joost Manassen
Joost Manassen (17 February 1927 – October 2019) ( he, יוסט מנסן) was a Dutch-Israeli chemist. He was a professor at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Career Manassen was born on 17 February 1927 in Amersfoort. During World War II he went into hiding from the Nazi's on a farm in North Holland. In 1959 he obtained his PhD at the University of Amsterdam under professor F.L.J. Sixma with a thesis titled: "Reactions of the n-butenes and 2-butanol in dilute acid solution : a mechanistic study". Manassen moved to Israel and started working for the Weizmann Institute of Science. In the 1970s, after the 1973 oil crisis, Manassen worked on alternative energy based on solar power. Joost Lagendijk (; born 8 June 1957 in Roosendaal, Netherlands) is a Dutch politician who was a columnist with the Turkish dailies Zaman and Today's Zaman until these newspapers were closed by the Turkish government.
