Jonathan R. Steinberg
Jonathan R. Steinberg (1939 – December 21, 2015) was an American lawyer who served as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. Steinberg was nominated by the President George H. W. Bush and confirmed by the United States Senate as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims in August 1990. Prior to his appointment to the court, Steinberg served as chief counsel and staff director for the Committee on Veterans' Affairs of the United States Senate. Steinberg graduated in the 206th Class of Central High School in Philadelphia; received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1960; and his Bachelor of Laws degree cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law in 1963. The American Law Institute (ALI) is a research and advocacy group of judges, lawyers, and legal scholars established in 1923 to promote the clarification and simplification of United States common law and its adaptation to changing social needs. Members of ALI include law professors, practicing attorneys, judges and other professionals in the legal industry. ALI writes documents known as " treatises", which are summaries of state common law (legal principles that come out of state court decisions). Alan MacGregor Cranston (June 19, 1914 – December 31, 2000) was an American politician and journalist who served as a United States Senator from California from 1969 to 1993, and as a President of the World Federalist Association from 1949 to 1952. Born in Palo Alto, California, Cranston worked as a journalist after graduating from Stanford University. After serving as California State Controller, he was elected to the Senate in 1968. He served as the Senate Democratic Whip from 1977 to 1991. In 1984, Cranston sought the Democratic presidential nomination, advocating a nuclear freeze during the later stages of the Cold War.
