Jonathan Patterson
Jonathan “Jon” Patterson is an American politician representing the 30th district in the Missouri House of Representatives. He began his tenure in the House in 2019, and was elected Missouri Speaker of the House in 2025. Career Patterson earned his bachelor's and medical degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. After medical school, Patterson completed his surgical residency at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City. He practiced general surgery in eastern Jackson county from 2011 to 2022. Missouri House of Representatives Patterson has served in the Missouri House of Representatives since 2019. In 2024, he was nominated for the role of Speaker of the House in the 2025 session. He faced challenger Justin Sparks, who received only 10 votes to Patterson's 152. Patterson is the first Asian American elected to Missouri's Speaker of the House. Jackson County is located in the western portion of the U.S. state of Missouri, on the border with Kansas. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 717,204. making it the second-most populous county in the state (after St. Louis County, Missouri, St. Louis County in the east). Sick Leave In The United States
The United States federal government requires unpaid leave for serious illnesses, but does not require that employees have access to paid sick leave to address their own short-term illnesses or the short-term illness of a family member. However, a number of states and localities do require some or all employers to provide paid sick leave to their workers. Some jurisdictions allow for "safe leave", the use of sick leave for health and safety reasons related to domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and other forms of violence and harassment. Availability A 2009 analysis from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) found that around 39 percent of American workers in the private sector do not have paid sick leave. Abortion In Missouri
Abortion in Missouri is currently not performed by providers per a ruling by the Missouri Supreme Court. It is nominally legal up to the point of fetal viability as a result of 2024 Missouri Amendment 3, which took effect in December 2024 after narrowly passing in the November 5 general election. Legal challenges to allow access are ongoing, and clinics were able to open on February 15, 2025. At least one clinic in Kansas City, Missouri, Kansas City and St. Louis was providing abortions. A clinic in Columbia, Missouri, Columbia opened up in March 2025. Operations in all three clinics are now paused per the state supreme court's ruling. In 2014, a poll by the Pew Research Center found that 45% of Missouri adults said that abortion should be legal vs. 50% that believe it should be illegal in all or most cases and 5% that do not know.
