Jonathan Johnson (baseball)
Jonathan Kent Johnson (born July 16, 1974) is an American former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for six seasons. He played for the Texas Rangers (baseball), Texas Rangers from 1998 to 2001, the San Diego Padres in 2002, and the Houston Astros in 2003. In 2018, he was named the first head coach of the new college baseball program at Columbia International University. High school and college career Johnson attended high school at Forest High School (Florida), Forest High School in Ocala, Florida. In his senior year, he committed to playing college baseball at Florida State University and was considered to be "clearly the most dominant pitcher" in his region. After graduating from high school, he spent three seasons with the Florida State Seminoles baseball team. In his freshman season, Johnson finished the year with a 10–1 record, a 1.68 earned run average (ERA), and 124 strikeouts in innings pitched. Earned Run Average
In baseball statistics, earned run average (ERA) is the average of earned runs allowed by a pitcher per nine innings pitched (i.e. the traditional length of a game). It is determined by dividing the number of earned runs allowed by the number of innings pitched and multiplying by nine. Thus, a lower ERA is better. Runs resulting from passed balls, defensive errors (including pitchers' defensive errors), and runners placed on base at the start of extra innings are recorded as unearned runs and omitted from ERA calculations. The Arizona Diamondbacks are an American professional baseball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. Lexington County Blowfish
The Lexington County Blowfish are a summer collegiate baseball team in the Coastal Plain League (CPL). The team plays its home games at Lexington County Baseball Stadium in unincorporated Lexington County, South Carolina (with an address in the town of Lexington). The Blowfish first started competing in the CPL during the 2006 season. During their first year in existence, the Blowfish led the CPL in attendance and was voted the CPL Organization of the Year. The Blowfish are known for their family-friendly fun at the ballpark and in the community. The Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL or Cape League) is a collegiate summer baseball wooden bat league located on Cape Cod in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. One of the nation's premier collegiate summer leagues, the league boasts over 1,000 former players who have gone on to play in the major leagues. Orleans Cardinals
The Orleans Firebirds, formerly the Orleans Cardinals, are a collegiate summer baseball team based in Orleans, Massachusetts. The team is a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) and plays in the league's East Division. The Firebirds play their home games at Eldredge Park in Orleans, which opened in 1913 and is the CCBL's oldest ballpark. The Firebirds are owned and operated by the non-profit Orleans Athletic Association. Collegiate Summer Baseball
Collegiate summer baseball leagues are amateur baseball leagues in the United States and Canada featuring players who have attended at least one year of college and have at least one year of athletic eligibility remaining. Generally, they operate from early June to early August. In contrast to college baseball, which allow aluminum or other composite baseball bats, players in these leagues use only wooden bats, hence the common nickname of these leagues as "wood-bat leagues". Collegiate summer leagues allow college baseball players the ability to compete using professional rules and equipment, giving them experience and allowing professional scouts the opportunity to observe players under such conditions. Golden Spikes Award
The Golden Spikes Award is bestowed annually to the best amateur baseball player in the United States. The award, created by USA Baseball and sponsored by the Major League Baseball Players Association, was first presented in 1978. It is given to an amateur player who best exhibits and combines "exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship". Along with the Dick Howser Trophy, the Golden Spikes Award is considered the most prestigious in amateur baseball. Ten winners of the Golden Spikes Award are members of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame, including Bob Horner, the inaugural winner in 1978.
