Jon T. Pitts
Jon T. Pitts (1948–2024) was an American mathematician who worked on geometric analysis and variational calculus. He was a professor at Texas A&M University. Pitts was born on 10 January 1948.https://paw.princeton.edu/memorial/jon-t-pitts-74 Pitts obtained his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1974 under the supervision of Frederick Almgren, Jr., with the thesis ''Every Compact Three-Dimensional Manifold Contains Two-Dimensional Minimal Submanifolds''. He received a Sloan Fellowship in 1981. The Almgren–Pitts min-max theory is named after his teacher and him. Pitts died on 30 May 2024. Camillo De Lellis
Camillo De Lellis (born 11 June 1976) is an Italian mathematician who is active in the fields of calculus of variations, hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, geometric measure theory and fluid dynamics. He is a permanent faculty member in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study. He was also one of the two managing editors of Inventiones Mathematicae. Biography Prior joining the faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study, De Lellis was a professor of mathematics at the University of Zurich from 2004 to 2018. Before this, he was a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich and at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences. He received his PhD in mathematics from the Scuola Normale Superiore at Pisa, under the guidance of Luigi Ambrosio in 2002. Geometric Analysis
Geometric analysis is a mathematical discipline where tools from differential equations, especially elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs), are used to establish new results in differential geometry and differential topology. The use of linear elliptic PDEs dates at least as far back as Hodge theory. More recently, it refers largely to the use of nonlinear partial differential equations to study geometric and topological properties of spaces, such as submanifolds of Euclidean space, Riemannian manifolds, and symplectic manifolds. This approach dates back to the work by Tibor Radó and Jesse Douglas on minimal surfaces, John Forbes Nash Jr. on isometric embeddings of Riemannian manifolds into Euclidean space, work by Louis Nirenberg on the Minkowski problem and the Weyl problem, and work by Aleksandr Danilovich Aleksandrov and Aleksei Pogorelov on convex hypersurfaces. Tobias Colding
Tobias Holck Colding (born 1963) is a Danish mathematician working on geometric analysis, and low-dimensional topology. He is the great grandchild of Ludwig August Colding. Biography He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to Torben Holck Colding and Benedicte Holck Colding. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1992 at the University of Pennsylvania under Chris Croke. Since 2005 Colding has been a professor of mathematics at MIT. He was on the faculty at the Courant Institute of New York University in various positions from 1992 to 2008. He has also been a visiting professor at MIT (2000–01) and at Princeton University (2001–02) and a postdoctoral fellow at MSRI (1993–94).
