Jon Odlum
Stanley Nicholas Jon Odlum (9 May 1936 – 19 February 2013) was a Saint Lucian politician. Originated from the Saint Lucia Labour Party. Was also a member of the now defunct Progressive Labor Party, led by his brother George Odlum George William Odlum (24 June 1934 – 28 September 2003) was a Saint Lucian left-wing politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. He was made a Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Human Services and Family Affairs on 10 December 2001. In the early 1970s he wrote sports reports for the "Voice of St Lucia" newspaper, and also gave weekly sports summaries on television. Later he became the Minister for Sport. Saint Lucia ( acf, Sent Lisi, french: Sainte-Lucie) is an island country of the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean. The island was previously called Iouanalao and later Hewanorra, names given by the native Arawaks and Caribs, two Amerindian peoples. Part of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. It covers a land area of with an estimated population of over 180,000 people as of 2022. The national capital is the city of Castries. The Progressive Labour Party was a political party in Saint Lucia. History The party was created by a split of the Saint Lucia Labour Party in 1981. It first contested national elections in 1982, when it finished second behind the United Workers' Party with 27.1% of the vote, but only won a single seat, taken by Jon Odlum. In the 6 April 1987 elections the party's vote share fell to 9.3% and they lost their single seat. George Odlum
George William Odlum (24 June 1934 – 28 September 2003) was a Saint Lucian left-wing politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Born in Castries, Odlum studied at Bristol University and Oxford University in the United Kingdom before returning to Saint Lucia as Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Trade. After working for the Commonwealth Secretariat and the West Indies Associated States, he formed the Saint Lucia Forum, a left-wing pressure group. This group merged with the Saint Lucia Labour Party in time for the 1974 elections; although the Party did not win, the progress they made allowed them to take power in 1979, with Odlum as Deputy Prime Minister. Although a secret agreement originally stated that Odlum would take power after six months, his support for Cuba and similar left-wing nations led to American pressure to keep him out.
