Joke Party
A frivolous party or a joke party is a political party which has been created for the purposes of entertainment or political satire. Such a party may or may not have a serious point behind its activities. Many countries have had a Pirate Party which could be considered frivolous. This is a list of frivolous political parties. Some more serious political parties, such as the Rent Is Too Damn High Party, may use the same tactics and humorous approaches to politics as their more frivolous counterparts but aim to address legitimate sociopolitical issues, something that some frivolous parties do not do. The Lemon Party of Canada (') was a frivolous Canadian political party which has operated on a federal level, and provincially in Quebec. The party was registered on January 8, 1987 by then-leader Denis R. Patenaude, and deregistered on November 14, 1998 for failing to have at least ten candidates stand for election. The party was headed by "Pope Terence the First", whose existence is unconfirmed. According to Jean-Simon Poirier, Terence is "sort of a mystical, mythical person" who doesn't spend much time in Canada. "The interesting thing about him is he's never in the country. Party of Donkeys or Donkeys' Party (; Donkey is epitome of docile imbecility) was a fictitious political party in Iran. It was founded in 1963, when the New Iran Party vs. the People's Party rivalry was shaped. The party had members with green membership cards and held gatherings. The party was a critique of the lack of popularity of the corrupt two-party system of Iran during the reign of the Shah and in fact drew more members than the actual government created political parties. The Persian word for donkey is "khar" which translates in English to "idiot". The Best Party () was an Icelandic political party founded by Jón Gnarr on 16 November 2009. The party contested the 2010 city council election in Reykjavík and won a plurality on the Reykjavík City Council, receiving 34.7% of the vote, defeating the Independence Party which received 33.6%. It was an observer member of the International Pirate Party, but not associated with the Pirate Party Iceland. Gnarr announced that the party was to be dissolved after he stepped down as mayor after the upcoming local elections in May 2014. It was founded in Aarhus in 1979 by a comedian, Jacob Haugaard (born 1952), and a few friends. Haugaard stood as an independent candidate in Aarhus County in each parliamentary election, until September 1994 when he was very unexpectedly elected to the Folketing with 23,253 personal votes, thereby winning a constituency seat (a locally based seat in parliament).
