Johnstown Novice Hurdle
The Johnstown Novice Hurdle is a Grade 2 National Hunt Hurdling (horse race), hurdle horse race in Ireland. It is run at Naas Racecourse, Naas in February over a distance of about 2 miles and during the race there are eight hurdles to be jumped. The race was first run in 1984 as a Listed race and it was upgraded to Grade 2 in 2003. The race is currently sponsored by Paddy Power bookmakers and has been run under sponsored titles since 2011. In horse racing in the United Kingdom, France and Republic of Ireland, National Hunt racing requires horses to jump fences and ditches. National Hunt racing in the UK is informally known as "jumps" and is divided into two major distinct branches: hurdles and steeplechases. Alongside these there are "bumpers", which are National Hunt flat races. In a hurdles race, the horses jump over obstacles called hurdles; in a steeplechase the horses jump over a variety of obstacles that can include plain fences, water jump or an open ditch. Tom Taaffe
Tom Taaffe (b. 15 June 1963) is an Irish racehorse trainer based at Portree Stables, Boston, Ardclough, Straffan, in County Kildare. He began training in the 1994/95 jumps season, having had a successful career as a professional jump jockey for the Arthur Moore stable. The son of jockey and trainer, Pat Taaffe, who famously rode Arkle to a Cheltenham Gold Cup treble in the 1960s and trained 1974 Gold Cup winner Captain Christy, he emulated his father's success by training Kicking King to win the same race in 2005. Edward O'Grady is an champion Irish National Hunt racehorse trainer. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, O'Grady was the leading Irish trainer at Cheltenham (after Vincent O'Brien) by number of winners. He was played by Pierce Brosnan in the 1980 film ''Murphy's Stroke''. Early life O'Grady attended Blackrock College and left veterinary college in Dublin to take over at Killeen Stables following his father's death in 1973.
