Johnny Reklai
Johnny Reklai (1 July 1948 – 11 March 2007) was a Palauan businessman and politician. He was elected as the President of the Senate of Palau in April 2005. He died in a boating accident, at the time of his death he was serving as the President of the Senate of Palau. He was succeeded in that office by Surangel S. Whipps, and his seat was filled by Hokkons Baules Hokkons Baules (born 7 June 1948) is a businessman and a politician, and currently a member of the Senate of Palau. Senate Of Palau
The Senate of Palau is the upper house of the Palau National Congress (''Olbiil era Kelulau''). The Senate has 13 members serving four-year terms in multi-seat constituencies. No political parties exist. The most recent election was held on 3 November 2020. Membership The Constitution does not indicate the number of a members of the Senate. Every 8 years, the National Congress appoints a reapportionment commission to draw up and recommend a district map allocating seats in accordance with the population. Therefore, the number of senators may change as frequently as every 8 years. Any voter can challenge a reapportionment before the Palau Supreme Court. During the first legislature in 1981, there were 18 Senators, which was reduced to 14 in 1984. Joshua Koshiba
Joshua Koshiba (born 10 December 1943) is a former member of the Senate of Palau. After his re-election in 2004, he became the longest-serving member of that body in the history of Palau. Koshiba was elected seven consecutive terms as Senator from 1980 to 2008. Political career Koshiba was born in Peleliu. He graduated from the University of Guam, holding a degree in mathematics. Koshiba was first elected to the Palauan Senate in 1980. In 1984, he became chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. In 1986, he became Senate President, a post which he held until 1991. He again chaired the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs from 1992 to 1996; in 1996, he was appointed chairman of the Senate Committee on Education. Hokkons Baules (born 7 June 1948) is a businessman and a politician, and currently a member of the Senate of Palau. He has been the president of the Senate since 19 January 2017. He was elected in 2008 to fill the seat of the late Senate president Johnny Reklai. He had previously served in the Senate of the Second Olbiil Era Kelulau from 1985 until 1988. Baules was elected to the Senate of the Seventh Olbiil Era Kelulau in a nationwide special election on 9 May 2007, following the passing of the late Senate president Johnny Reklai.
