John Hanmer, 1st Baron Hanmer
John Hanmer, 1st Baron Hanmer (22 December 1809 – 8 March 1881), known as Sir John Hanmer, Bt, between 1828 and 1872, was a British politician. Background and education Hanmer was the son of Thomas Hanmer, eldest son of Sir Thomas Hanmer, 2nd Baronet. His mother was Arabella Charlotte, daughter of T. S. D. Bucknell. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. In 1828, he succeeded his grandfather as third Baronet. Political career Hanmer sat as Member of Parliament for Shrewsbury between 1832 and 1837, for Kingston upon Hull between 1841 and 1847 and for Flint Boroughs between 1847 and 1872. He also served as High Sheriff of Flintshire for 1832. In 1872 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Hanmer, of Hanmer, and of Flint, both in the County of Flint. Family Lord Hanmer married Georgiana Chetwynd, daughter of Sir George Chetwynd, 2nd Baronet, in 1833. There were no children from the marriage. Lady Hanmer died in March 1880. Sir Robert Cunliffe, 5th Baronet
Sir Robert Alfred Cunliffe, 5th Baronet (17 January 1839 – 18 June 1905) was a British Liberal Party (UK), Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons in two periods between 1872 and 1885. Career Cunliffe was the son of Robert Ellis Cunliffe (1807 - 1855), of the Bengal Civil Service. He was educated at Eton College and joined the Scots Fusilier Guards in 1857. In 1859, he succeeded his grandfather, General Sir Robert Henry Cunliffe, in the Cunliffe baronets, baronetcy. He retired from the regular army in 1862 and became Lieutenant colonel (United Kingdom), Lieutenant-Colonel commanding the Royal Denbigh Rifles Militia on 22 May 1872. This is a list of High Sheriffs of Flintshire. The High Sheriff is the oldest secular office under the Crown. Formerly, the High Sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in the county, but over the centuries most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now defunct, so that its functions are now largely ceremonial. Hanmer Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for members of the Hanmer family of Flintshire, Wales, one in the Baronetage of England and one in the Baronetage of Great Britain. Only one creation is extant as of 2008. The third Baronet of the second creation was elevated to the peerage as Baron Hanmer in 1872, a title which became extinct in 1881. The family name derived from the manor of Hanmer in the Diocese of St. Asaph. The Hanmer Baronetcy, of Hanmer in the County of Flint, was created in the Baronetage of England on 8 July 1620 for John Hanmer, subsequently Member of Parliament for Flintshire. The second Baronet represented Flint and Flintshire in the House of Commons. The third Baronet was Member of Parliament for Flint and Evesham and was killed in a duel. His nephew the fourth Baronet sat for Thetford, Flintshire and Suffolk and served as Speaker of the House of Commons. The title became extinct on the latter's death in 1746.
