John Wesley Iliff
John Wesley Iliff Sr. (December 18, 1831 – February 9, 1878) was a Colorado cattle rancher who is the namesake of the Iliff School of Theology in Denver. Biography Iliff was born on December 18, 1831, in McLuney, Ohio to Salome Reed and Thomas Iliff. He attended Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio but did not graduate. In 1857, at the age of twenty-six, his father gave him $500 in cash, and he moved to Ohio City, Kansas, where he opened a retail store. In 1859, gold was discovered in Colorado. He moved to Denver, Colorado to open a new retail store on Blake Street, trading supplies for livestock from new immigrants, then fattening them on the open range and using the profits to buy land in northeast Colorado, creating the largest ranch in Colorado history, where he raised as many as 35,000 heads a year to sell to Union Pacific construction crews, becoming a millionaire known as "the Cattle King of the Plains", leaving his fortune to found Iliff School of Theology. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is a museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States, with more than 28,000 Western and Native American art works and artifacts. The facility also has the world's most extensive collection of American rodeo photographs, barbed wire, saddlery, and early rodeo trophies. The Town of Iliff is a Statutory Town located in Logan County, Colorado, United States. The population was 246 at the 2020 United States census. History The town was named for John Wesley Iliff, a cattleman who owned a ranch near the town site. The people of Iliff have proven to be a resilient folk, surviving a blizzard in 1949 and a flood in 1968. Iliff resides on the fertile banks of the South Platte River. The South Platte has been a cornerstone to the community. The first building constructed was a Post Office and Real Estate Office in 1870. On January 6, 1885, the city was surveyed and on May 4 of that year, a school district was organized. By 1887 a grocery store and lumber yard were in business. The Iliff Bank was established in 1907. Fairmount Cemetery in Denver, Colorado, was founded in 1890 and is Denver's second oldest operating cemetery after Riverside Cemetery.
