John Wallace (Australian Politician)
John Alston Wallace (1828 – 17 October 1901) was an Australian politician Born in Rutherglen near Glasgow to draper James Wallace, he became a draper and miner in Renfrewshire, but when his first wife died in 1852 he emigrated to Melbourne, where he briefly returned to mining before becoming a storekeeper in Bendigo, Victoria, Bendigo. He had several stores, hotels and businesses in the area and was an investor in a number of companies. In 1865 he married Theresa Monahan, with whom he had eight children; he would later remarry Ada Reid. In 1873 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for Eastern Province (Victoria), Eastern Province, switching to North-Eastern Province (Victoria), North-Eastern Province in 1882 and serving until his death at Elsternwick, Victoria, Elsternwick in 1901. John Findley Wallace (September 10, 1852 – July 3, 1921) was an American engineer and administrator, best known for serving as chief engineer for construction of the Panama Canal between 1904 and 1905. He had previously gained experience in railroad construction in the American Midwest. John Wallace (8 April 1654 – 11 July 1733) was a Roman Catholic bishop who served as the Coadjutor Vicar Apostolic of the Vicariate Apostolic of Scotland and then of Lowland District, Scotland. Life Born in Arbroath, Forfarshire in 1654 and converted to the Catholic Church in 1690, he was ordained a priest on 3 April 1708. He was appointed the Coadjutor Vicariate Apostolic of Scotland and Titular Bishop of ''Cyrrhus'' by the Holy See on 30 April 1720. He was consecrated to the Episcopate on 21 September 1720. The principal consecrator was Bishop James Gordon. John Williamson Wallace CBE FRSE (1949 -) is a Scottish trumpet player, composer and arts educator. Early life Wallace was born in Methilhill, Fife, Scotland. His father Christopher Wallace worked as a joiner at the Tullis Russell Paper Mill in Glenrothes and played in the Tullis Russell Mills Band for 65 years. At the age of seven, John was given a cornet and taught to play, initially by his father. He soon joined the junior band and later progressed to the senior band, being the fourth generation of his family to play in a brass band. In 1964, he was selected to play in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Education Wallace read Music at Kings College Cambridge, where his Director of Studies was David Willcocks. He then went on to study composition, with trumpet as a second study, at the Royal Academy of Music and York University. John Wallace (woodcarver)
Chief John Wallace (Haida) was a Haida people master carver who was commissioned in 1931 by the US Department of the Interior to carve two, 8-foot totem poles, "The Raven" and "The Chief's Daughter." These are in the collection of the Interior Museum. He also worked in Hydaburg Totem Park in the Tongass National Forest, Alaska. Twenty-one totem poles were brought by the Civilian Conservation Corps and the US Forest Service to Hydaburg in the 1930s. Of these 21 poles, five were restored. The CCC and the US Forest Service commissioned the replication of 16 poles between 1939 and 1942. Early life John Bruce Wallace a/k/a jacewbal was born February 6, 1950, in Calais, Maine, United States. John exhibited an affinity for the performing arts at an early age, first in acting, playing the lead roles in grade school plays, later he expanded his interests to include singing solo for his grade school classmates. Encouraged by his father to take up trumpet, he began studying clarinet while in grade school. By high school John had found "the Guitar" and would perform almost daily during summers on his family's front porch for the traffic passing by.
