John Saunders Cruess
John Saunders Cruess (February 5, 1827 – 1897) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Victoria West in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Conservative from 1886 to 1890. He was born in Ohio in 1827, the son of John Cruess, an Irish-born Quaker of German descent, and came to Upper Canada with his family in 1829. Cruess married Eliza Betts. He operated a rural post office from 1879 to 1883 at Barclay and also served on the council for Mariposa Township. He was unsuccessful in an attempt at reelection in 1890. Patrons Of Industry
The Patrons of Industry in Canada were based on the Patrons of Industry of Michigan that had formed in 1889. It was dedicated to upholding and encouraging the moral, social, intellectual, political and financial situation of farmers and to preserve the way of life that existed in farming communities in the late nineteenth century against encroaching industrialization. It cooperated with the urban labour movement to address the political frustrations of both groups with big business. The Patrons' first appearance in Canada was The Grand Association of the Patrons of Industry in Ontario, founded in 1890. It declared itself independent of the U.S. group in 1891. Although centred in Ontario, the organization branched out into Manitoba (see Patrons of Industry in Manitoba), Alberta, Quebec and the Maritime provinces. Mariposa Township, Ontario
The Township of Mariposa was a municipality located in the southwest corner of the former Victoria County, now the city of Kawartha Lakes, in the Canadian province of Ontario.
