John Sands (company)
John Sands is an Australian printing company and former distributor of games and computer hardware that is now a wholly owned subsidiary of American Greetings. The business was founded in Sydney, Australia by a 19 year old English immigrant John Sands in 1837. In 1851, John Sands and Thomas Kenny founded Sands and Kenny in Sydney. The firm later became Sands, Kenny & Co., and then John Sands Ltd. Sands began building his publishing and stationery business in George Street, Sydney. On 18 April 1867, a fire broke out at the Reibey Cottage on 394 George Street, which adjoined the John Sands building. In 1881, John Sands introduced the first Christmas and New Year's Day greeting cards to be produced by an Australian printer. Through the years games, magazines, maps and books were added to the product line. The John Sands Family relinquished control of the company after 141 years in 1978. ''Jem and The Holograms'', also known as simply ''Jem'', is an American animated musical television series that ran from 1985 to 1988. The series is about record company owner Jerrica Benton, her singer alter-ego Jem, and the adventures of her band Jem and The Holograms. The series was a joint collaboration by Hasbro, Sunbow Entertainment, Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions, the same team responsible for ''G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero (1985 TV series), G.I. The Sands Directories, also published as the Sands and Kenny Directory and the Sands and McDougall Directory were annual publications in Australia. Mettoy (an abbreviation of "Metal Toy") was a British manufacturing company founded in 1933 by German émigré Philip Ullmann, who was later joined by South African-born German Arthur Katz who had previously worked for Ullmann at his toy company Tipp and Co of Nuremberg. The firm made a variety of lithographed metal wind-up toys. Both Jewish, they moved to Britain following Hitler's rise to power in 1933.
