John Russell (athlete)
John Frederick Russell (4 February 1932 – 10 April 2025) was an Australian former Long-distance track event, long-distance runner who competed in the Athletics at the 1956 Summer Olympics – Men's marathon, marathon at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Russell died on 10 April 2025 at the age of 93. He finished eleventh in the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games marathon. Long-distance running, or endurance running, is a form of continuous running over distances of at least . Physiologically, it is largely Aerobic exercise, aerobic in nature and requires stamina as well as mental strength. Within endurance running come two different types of Respiration (physiology), respiration. The more prominent side that runners experience more frequently is aerobic respiration. This occurs when oxygen is present, and the body can utilize oxygen to help generate energy and muscle activity. On the other side, anaerobic respiration occurs when the body is deprived of oxygen, and this is common towards the final stretch of races when there is a drive to speed up to a greater intensity. The 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games (Welsh: ''Gemau Ymerodraeth Prydain a'r Gymanwlad'' 1958) were held in Cardiff, Wales, from 18 to 26 July 1958.
