John R. Monaghan
Ensign John R. Monaghan (26 March 1873 – 1 April 1899) was an officer in the United States Navy. Biography Born in Chewelah, Washington Territory Monaghan was a part of the first graduating class of Gonzaga University, and ultimately graduated from the Naval Academy in June 1895. For the next two years, as a Passed Midshipman, he served in the cruiser , flagship of the U.S. Asiatic Station. Promoted to the rank of Ensign in July 1897, he was next assigned to the monitor and gunboat , both of which operated along the West Coast of the Americas. In July 1898, during the Spanish–American War, he became an officer of the cruiser , which was then the Pacific Station's flagship. In March 1899 Ensign Monaghan, onboard ''Philadelphia'', was sent to the troubled Samoan Islands. On 1 April, while serving ashore with a combined unit of British, Americans and Samoans, his force was ambushed by another group of rebel Samoans. Chewelah, Washington
Chewelah ( ) is a city in Stevens County, Washington, United States. It is located approximately northwest of Spokane. The population was 2,607 at the 2010 census, a 19.3% increase from 2000. History The name of the town comes from a Kalispel word, , meaning 'watersnake' or ' gartersnake'. Prior to colonization by European-Americans, Chewelah was home to a band of the Kalispel people. The band was known as the ''slet̓éw̓si'', meaning "valley people". Originally, the area was called Fool's Prairie, after the indigenous Kalispel who left his own tribe because of a dispute. Chewelah and the rest of the Colville River Valley were part of the Colville Indian Reservation from April 9, 1872, when the reservation was created, until July 2, 1872, when a subsequent executive order reduced the size of the reservation. Norman Edsall
Norman Eckley Edsall (3 June 1873 – 1 April 1899) was a sailor in the United States Navy during the Spanish–American War. Biography Born in Columbus, Kentucky, Edsall enlisted in the U.S. Navy 27 June 1898. While serving on ''Philadelphia'', Seaman Edsall went ashore with a landing party on 1 April 1899 to suppress hostile natives near Vailele, Samoa. He was killed attempting to carry his wounded commander, Lieutenant Philip Lansdale, to safety, and is buried on Samoa. Legacy Two U.S. Navy ships have been named USS ''Edsall'' in his honor. Philip Van Horne Lansdale (15 February 1858 – 1 April 1899) was an officer in the United States Navy. Biography Lansdale, born in Washington, D.C., graduated as Passed Midshipman from the Naval Academy 18 June 1879.
