John R. McLeod
John Robert McLeod (January 20, 1872 – May 4, 1931) was a Canadian medical doctor and politician from Alberta. McLeod was born in Zorra, Ontario on January 20, 1872 to William C. McLeod and Mary C. Mackay, both of Scottish heritage. McLeod would complete is M.D. at Detroit College of Medicine in 1896, and be licensed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons in the North-West Territories. McLeod married American Grace Victoria Bentley in 1898 and served as a medical health officer in Michigan from 1897 to 1900, and would later purchase a farm in Canada. Zorra
Zorra is a township in Oxford County, situated in south-western Ontario, Canada. A predominantly rural municipality, Zorra was formed in 1975 through the amalgamation of East Nissouri, West Zorra and North Oxford townships. It is best known for the Highland Games weekend held each summer in Embro, celebrating the heritage of the Scottish pioneer families which grew from the 1830s to form nearly a quarter of the county's population. Ponoka was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1905 to 1986. History Ponoka was one of the original 25 electoral districts contested in the 1905 Alberta general election upon Alberta joining Confederation in September 1905. The district was redrawn frequently over the years but had remained largely a thin slice in central Alberta. The electoral district was named for the Town of Ponoka in central Alberta. 1905 Alberta General Election
The 1905 Alberta general election was the first general election held in the Province of Alberta, Canada on November 9, 1905, to elect twenty-five members of the Alberta legislature to the 1st Alberta Legislative Assembly, shortly after the province was created out of the Northwest Territories on September 1, 1905. The Alberta Liberal Party led by Premier Alexander C. Rutherford won twenty-three of the twenty-five seats in the new legislature, defeating the Conservative Party, which was led by a young lawyer, Richard Bennett, who later served as Prime Minister of Canada. The election was held using the first past the post system. The number of seats won by the Liberals was far above its portion of the popular vote. The Liberal Party received a majority of the votes cast. This was the last Alberta election to exclusively use a single-winner first past-the-post-system until 1959.
