John Poulett, 1st Baron Poulett
John Poulett, 1st Baron Poulett (1585 – 20 March 1649), of Hinton St George, Somerset, was an English sailor and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1610 and 1621 and was later raised to the peerage. Origins Poulett was the son of Sir Anthony Poulett (1562–1600) (also spelt Paulet), of Hinton St George, Governor of Jersey, and Captain of the Guard to Queen Elizabeth by his wife Catherine Norris, daughter of Henry Norris, 1st Baron Norreys (1525–1601) of Rycote in Oxfordshire. Career He was educated at University College, Oxford and was admitted as a student of the Middle Temple in 1610. He was a Justice of the Peace for Somerset by 1613 to at least 1640 and was appointed Sheriff of Somerset for 1616–17. He was elected as Member of Parliament for Somerset in 1610 and 1614, and for Lyme Regis in 1621. John Poulett, 2nd Baron Poulett
John Poulett, 2nd Baron Poulett DL (1615 – 15 September 1665), of Hinton St George in Somerset, was an English peer and Member of Parliament who fought on the Royalist side during the English Civil War. The son of John Poulett, 1st Baron Poulett (1585–1649), he was knighted in 1635 and elected to the Long Parliament as Member for Somerset in 1640, but was ejected for his Royalist sympathies in 1642. In 1643 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Exeter College, Oxford. During the war he first commanded a regiment in Munster, but after peace was temporarily concluded in Ireland brought his troops to England, where they formed part of the garrison of Winchester Castle until it surrendered. John Poulett, 3rd Baron Poulett
John Poulett, 3rd Baron Poulett (c. 1641 – June 1679), was an English peer. Poulett was the son of John Poulett, 2nd Baron Poulett, by Catharine Vere, daughter of Horace Vere, 1st Baron Vere of Tilbury. He sat as a Knight of the Shire for Somerset between 1662 and 1665, when he entered the House of Lords on the death of his father. In 1674 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, which he remained until his death. Lord Poulett married, firstly in 1663, Essex Popham, eldest daughter of Alexander Popham of Littlecote, Wiltshire by whom he had two daughters. He married, secondly 1667, Lady Susan Herbert, daughter of Philip Herbert, 5th Earl of Pembroke. He died in June 1679 and was succeeded in the barony by the son of his second marriage, John, who was created Earl Poulett Earl Poulett ''(pronounced "Paulett")'' was a title in the Peerage of England. John Poulett, 1st Earl Poulett KG (c. 1668 – 28 May 1743) was an English peer. Life Poulett was the son of John Poulett, 3rd Baron Poulett and his second wife, Susan Herbert, daughter of Philip Herbert, 5th Earl of Pembroke. John Poulett, 2nd Earl Poulett (10 December 1708 – 5 November 1764), styled Viscount Hinton until 1743 was an English peer. John Poulett, 4th Earl Poulett, KT (3 April 1756 – 14 January 1819), styled Viscount Hinton between 1764 and 1788, was a British peer and militia officer. Poulett was the son of Vere Poulett, 3rd Earl Poulett, by Mary Butt, daughter of Richard Butt, of Arlington, Gloucestershire. From 22 January 1779 until 1798 he was Colonel of the East Devon Militia, which was on active service in home defence until 1783. He succeeded his father in the earldom in 1788. In 1792 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, a post he held until his death. He was also a Recorder of Bridgwater. The East Devon Militia was again embodied, under his colonelcy, for active service in March 1794, and he was also commissioned colonel of the Somersetshire Fencible Cavalry. On 30 May, he was invested a Knight of the Thistle. He was appointed a Lord of the Bedchamber to George III on 19 November 1795, an office he held until his death. John Poulett, 5th Earl Poulett
Colonel John Poulett, 5th Earl Poulett (5 July 1783 – 1864), styled Viscount Hinton from 1788 to 1819, was an English peer and militia officer. Educated at Harrow and Brasenose College, Oxford, Hinton was commissioned a captain in the 1st Somerset Militia in 1801. His father was made colonel of that regiment in 1803, and on 20 September 1804, Hinton himself became colonel of the 2nd Somerset Militia, and was appointed a deputy lieutenant of Somerset on 10 January 1805. Upon the death of his father in January 1819, he succeeded to the title of Earl Poulett, and also succeeded his father as colonel of the 1st Somersetshire Militia. He commanded the regiment until 1852, when he was succeeded by his son Vere Poulett, Viscount Hinton.
