John A
Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario). As a lawyer, he was involved in several high-profile cases and quickly became prominent in Kingston, which elected him in 1844 to the legislature of the Province of Canada. By 1857, he had become premier under the colony's unstable political system. In 1864, when no party proved capable of governing for long, Macdonald agreed to a proposal from his political rival, George Brown, that the parties unite in a Great Coalition to seek federation and political reform. John Lasarus Williams (29 October 1924 – 15 June 2004), known as John L, was a Welsh nationalist activist. Williams was born in Llangoed on Anglesey, but lived most of his life in nearby Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. In his youth, he was a keen footballer, and he also worked as a teacher. His activism started when he campaigned against the refusal of Brewer Spinks, an employer in Blaenau Ffestiniog, to permit his staff to speak Welsh. John Charles Pollock (1924 – 6 January 2012) was a Christian author. He was the official biographer of Billy Graham and lived with his wife in rural North Devon, England. Writings One of his best known books is ''The Apostle, A Life of Paul''. This book presents Paul the Apostle and his life as taken from his journeys in Biblical times. The story takes the modern day reader back into history. It portrays Paul as he deals with personal issues while trying to deal with his conversion to Christianity. He wrote extensively on William Wilberforce, including a full-length biography (1977) which has never been out of print. He also wrote about John Newton, composer of the hymn Amazing Grace, and was a board member of the John Newton Project. His other biographies cover many other renowned Christian individuals, including Hudson and Maria Taylor (1965), L. Nelson Bell (1971), D.L. John Pollock (1893–1955) was a Scottish political activist. Born in Kilmarnock, Pollock worked for many years as a boilermaker. He joined a Marxist group when he was sixteen, but soon left, and instead joined the Independent Labour Party (ILP). He worked as the election agent for Robert Climie, Labour candidate for Kilmarnock on several occasions, and as a result, he lost his job. He found employment on the buses, but was again sacked for his political work. John Calvin Pollock (October 5, 1857 – January 24, 1937) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Kansas. Education and career Born in Belmont County, Ohio, Pollock received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from Franklin College in 1882 and read law to enter the bar in 1884. He was in private practice in Newton, Iowa from 1884 to 1885, then in Hartsville, Missouri until 1886, and then in Winfield, Kansas until 1901. He was a justice of the Supreme Court of Kansas from 1901 to 1903. Federal judicial service Pollock was nominated by President Theodore Roosevelt on November 25, 1903, to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Kansas vacated by Judge William Cather Hook. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on December 1, 1903, and received his commission the same day. Sir John Donald Pollock FRSE LLD (23 November 1868 – 4 June 1962) was a Scottish physician, industrialist and philanthropist who served as Rector of the University of Edinburgh from 1939 to 1945 and gave land to the University to build halls of residence. Pollock Halls of Residence were built on the site, and were named for him. Life He was born in Galashiels on 23 November 1868 the son of Margaret (née Donald) and Rev John Barr Pollock. He studied science at the University of Glasgow then transferred to the University of Edinburgh to study medicine, graduating with an MB Chb in 1892 and gaining his MD in 1895. He then worked as a general practitioner in South Kensington. From 1908 he became the personal physician and companion to the Maurice FitzGerald, 6th Duke of Leinster, who lived in his own personal villa at the asylum at Craig House in Edinburgh. Sir Frederick John Pollock, 4th Baronet (26 Dec 1878 – 22 July 1963) was an English historian, journalist and translator. Life John Pollock was the son of Sir Frederick Pollock, 3rd Baronet and Georgina Harriet Deffell, younger daughter of John Deffell, of Calcutta. He was educated at Eton College, graduated in 1900, and continued his education at Trinity College, Cambridge (Bachelor of Arts, Fellow 1902, Master of Arts 1904). From 1915 to 1919, John Pollock was in Poland and Russia as chief commissioner of the Great Britain to Poland and Galicia Fund under the Russian Red Cross. He was awarded the Order of Saint Anna. In 1920 he married famous Russian actress Lydia Borisovna Yavorskaya (Gubbenet / Hubbenet) (1874-1921), ex-wife of writer prince Vladimir Baryatinskiy. ''Missing'' (originally titled ''1-800-Missing'') is a Canadian crime drama television series based on the ''1-800-WHERE-R-YOU'' book series by Meg Cabot. John Pollock is a Canadian sports reporter best known for his work on Fight Network Radio, '' Live Audio Wrestling'' and founding the website '' POST Wrestling''. He has also produced the acclaimed documentary '' Survival of the Hitman'' about professional wrestler Bret Hart. Early life Pollock was born in Toronto.
