John Plummer Marcellus
John Plummer Marcellus (July 26, 1838 – May 29, 1932) was a Canadian politician and rancher from Alberta. Early life He was born at Morrisburg, Ontario. Marcellus married his wife Maria Barkley in 1871 at Dunbar, Ontario. 1905 election Marcellus ran for the Alberta legislature in the 1905 Alberta general election. He won a hotly contested 3-way race in the Pincher Creek electoral district in rural southeast Alberta. He served one term as a backbencher in the Legislative Assembly before retiring in 1909. Morrisburg, Ontario
Morrisburg is an unincorporated community in the Municipality of South Dundas, located in Eastern Ontario, Canada. History On November 11, 1813, the Battle of Crysler's Farm, at which a British force repelled an invading American army, took place near what was later to be called Morrisburg. United Empire Loyalist settlers settled in Dundas County, creating West Williamsburg and was part of the Williamsburg Canal project. Between 1843 and 1856, canals were built on the north side of the St. Lawrence River. West Williamsburg was renamed Morrisburg in 1851 in honour of Brockville, Ontario, politician James Morris, who was named the first Postmaster General of the United Province of Canada. Incorporated as a village in 1860, Morrisburg had a growing manufacturing base consisting of a gristmill, a carding mill and a fanning mill. The Grand Trunk Railway reached Morrisburg in 1855. Pincher Creek, Alberta
Pincher Creek is a town in southern Alberta, Canada. It is located immediately east of the Canadian Rockies, west of Lethbridge and south of Calgary. History For centuries before European settlers reached this area and inhabited it, Indigenous clans of the Blackfoot, Peigan and Kootenai passed through, lived in or frequented the region. The town received its name in 1868 when a group of prospectors lost a pincer in the small creek at this location. These pincers would have been used as a device for trimming the feet of the horses and thus had some value to the group. In 1874, the North-West Mounted Police came to southern Alberta. One of them discovered the rusting tools in the creek, and they named the area Pincher Creek. Pincher Creek was officially listed as a place name in the Geological Survey Report, 1880. Pincher Creek was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1905 to 1940. History The Pincher Creek electoral district was founded as one of the original 25 electoral districts contested in the 1905 Alberta general election upon Alberta joining Confederation in September 1905. The Pincher Creek electoral district was abolished prior to the 1940 Alberta general election and the territory was redistributed into the Pincher Creek-Crowsnest and Cardston electoral districts. David Warnock
David Warnock, OBE (April 11, 1865 – August 23, 1932) was a politician and veterinarian from Alberta, Canada. He was educated at the Hamilton Academy, Lanarkshire, Scotland and at the West of Scotland Technical College (eventually becoming in 1964 the University of Strathclyde), graduating MRCVS. In 1889 he emigrated to the North West Territories, Canada. Early life David Warnock was born on April 11, 1865, in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. He married Annie Whitelaw in October 1897 and they had two children. He moved to Alberta in December 1889 and to British Columbia on March 27, 1919. He served as the first president of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association from 1906 to 1916. 1905 Alberta General Election
The 1905 Alberta general election was the first general election held in the Province of Alberta, Canada on November 9, 1905, to elect twenty-five members of the Alberta legislature to the 1st Alberta Legislative Assembly, shortly after the province was created out of the Northwest Territories on September 1, 1905. The Alberta Liberal Party led by Premier Alexander C. Rutherford won twenty-three of the twenty-five seats in the new legislature, defeating the Conservative Party, which was led by a young lawyer, Richard Bennett, who later served as Prime Minister of Canada. The election was held using the first past the post system. The number of seats won by the Liberals was far above its portion of the popular vote. The Liberal Party received a majority of the votes cast. This was the last Alberta election to exclusively use a single-winner first past-the-post-system until 1959.
