John Pellew (cricketer)
John Pellew (17 July 1882 – 17 October 1946) was an Australian cricketer. He played in twenty-one first-class matches for South Australia between 1903 and 1909. He was once regarded as "one of South Australia's most brilliant batsmen." He was the brother of Arthur Pellew, and a cousin of Nip and Lance Pellew, who were all cricketers. Death On 17 October 1946, Pellew was killed when he was struck by a train at the Unley Park railway station. His body was taken by the train to Royal Adelaide Hospital. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is of three or more days scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but the term was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the International Cricket Council, Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Nip Pellew
Clarence Everard "Nip" Pellew (21 September 1893 – 9 May 1981) was an Australian cricketer who played in 10 Test matches from 1920 to 1921. Pellew was also a leading Australian rules footballer who, due to permit problems, was only allowed to play one game for North Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). He played in the centre against Sturt Football Club's star player Vic Richardson (who also played Test cricket). He was regarded as an exceptionally brilliant fieldsman, his "running, picking up and throwing in are a positive joy to behold". Lance Pellew
Lancelot Vivian Pellew CMG (15 December 1899 – 8 December 1970) was a cricketer who played first-class cricket for South Australia from 1920 to 1923. He was later a prominent lawyer and judge in Adelaide. Early life and sporting career Pellew attended St Peter's College, Adelaide, playing in the cricket First XI, which he captained in 1918. He went on to the University of Adelaide to study law. He made his first-class debut for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at the end of February 1920. He scored 25 and, in the second innings, 57 while his elder brother Clarrie, later known as "Nip", scored 271. He played three matches in the 1920-21 season, scoring 203 runs with two fifties at an average of 40.60. He was selected to tour New Zealand with the Australian team at the end of the season, but was not a success there, scoring only 52 runs in five matches. Royal Adelaide Hospital
The Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), colloquially known by its initials or pronounced as "the Rah", is South Australia's largest hospital, owned by the state government as part of Australia's public health care system. The RAH provides tertiary health care services for South Australia and provides secondary care clinical services to residents of Adelaide's central metropolitan area, which includes the inner suburbs.
