John P. Abizaid
John Philip Abizaid (born 1 April 1951) is a retired United States Army General (United States), general and former United States Central Command (CENTCOM) commander who served as the List of ambassadors of the United States to Saudi Arabia, United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 2019 to 2021. In 2007, Abizaid retired after 34 years of service. As of 2007, Abizaid is employed as a fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He assumed the Distinguished Chair of the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point in December 2007. Abizaid was appointed to the board of directors of RPM International on 24 January 2008, and also sits on the board of directors of the Defense Ventures Group. The United States ambassador to Saudi Arabia is the official representative of the president of the United States to the head of state of Saudi Arabia. The United States recognized the government of King Ibn Saud in 1931, but it was not until 1939 when it appointed its first U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Bert Fish, then resident in Cairo and United States Ambassador to Egypt, ambassador to Egypt. The 504th Infantry Regiment, originally the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (504th PIR), is an airborne forces regiment of the United States Army, part of the 82nd Airborne Division, with a long and distinguished history.
